point weight to weaken shaft?
« on: February 03, 2015, 12:34:00 AM »
OK after long discussion I have came to the conclusion that I need weaker shafts. However that's not an option. But I'm sure there are some of you that could help me get a heavier point to pull it in. I'm about 2" right of where I look. My point weight now is 160gr. How high up would I need to go to at least get it closer.

Im assuming you are shooting left handed. If you are right handed you are already too weak. You also dont say at what distance you are 2 " rightat. I would try 20 grain or so increments. Big Jim sells all different weight of points, plus 50 and 100 grain inserts. There is no magic equazion, you just have to experiment. What works for one, will not work for another. Bareshaft at about 15 yards and the story will tell itself.

How do you know that spine is what's causing your point of impact to be off?  What is the arrow flight like with no feathers...does bare shaft shooting indicate a weak spine?

I'm right handed an arrow impacting left is stiff.

Have shoot no feathers but they shoot like darts at 20 just hit left. Ik it's because of how far it's cut from center.I like to be able to pick up my bows and at 20yrds hit where I look.

First post says 2" right... I'm certainly not the tuning king, but had a thought. What type inserts do you have installed? If aluminum, you could go to brass and have more room to play with. Just a thought.

I meant I need to move right lol. Sorry I was misleading. I only have wood arrows and can't afford new ones. So my only option us point weight.

If your bare shafts are flying well but to the left a touch, you can try a little heavier point but this will affect how the bare shaft shoots too. Maybe for the better but a straight shaft at 20 yards is tough too fool with.
I would either fletch some up and see if the field points and broadheads fly to where you look or try some 190 g points.

You can also try thinning strike plate and raising brace height.

There are lots of little things you can do that may correct slightly stiff.

A 75 gr Woody Weight could help.  Have you tried cock feather in?  You can slightly reduce the thickness of your side plate.  Brace height adjustments, where are you now?  Nocks too tight?  They can cause hitting left too.  You can even cant your bow slightly more when shooting.

Just a few things to try that might help.

The easiest would be thinning your side plate, if you are using thick leather then try a thinner calf hair plate.

Gathering from what you have posted you need a very slight adjustment. Katman's suggestion of a thinner strike plate if possible or raising brace height would be the first thing I would try and in that order.

Additionally I have found that you can add 15-20 grains of soft lead wire tamped down into the front of the field point taper. Use a proper size machine bolt and a hammer with the field point tip on a piece of 2x4 or some other hard wood surface you don't mind marring.

In case you can't thin your strike plate any, I've found 50 grains will move my groups center about 2 inches.
