« on: February 05, 2015, 09:33:00 AM »
Would love to see some traditional archery killed coues deer. Stories, Pics anything. I am thinking of putting a trip together for next January down near Tucson to go after the little grey ghosts.

killed this one is southern AZ a few years back.  It is a fun hunt and a chance to get out of the cold in January.   Jim

Two suggestions for you...put in for javalina in the unit you want to hunt and make sure you bring along a good set of at least 10x optics. Your gonna be looking through them for hours a day.  I haven't succeeded in getting one with a bow yet, mostly because I end up chasing mule deer around. We have killed some really big ones in Unit 21during the late rifle season and always end up seeing some giant mule deer as well.

Great buck Jim! Did you take him spot and stalk or from a blind?  Fireman, thanks for the advice I have a really good set of bino's and a 15x45 vortex viper hd spotter for this kind of hunt.  I would also not pass up a mule deer if given the chance. I just want to go some place different when it gets real cold here in Kansas.

I tell you what, anybody that can kill a Coues deer via spot and stalk with a stickbow is the MAN!   I stayed away from them for a long time as I know a few guys who have all NA29 and they are hooked on the Coues. They are the spookiest animals in North America imo. I chased them for the first time this winter in southern AZ and they are humbling. BUT, I can see going back every winter with my wife after the kids are gone. What a blast.

Here is a video I took from about 1200 yards thru my spotting scope of my buddy stalking a nice buck:

Lived in AZ most of my life and chased Coues at least once a year most every year with either a gun or bow.  Never did poke one with trad gear but have tons of great memories!  Interesting animal to hunt.  Definitely need a good pair of binoculars, take your time and glass every nook and cranny.  Once the deer see you, they will hold still for hours.  Think of an oversized cottontail.

My favorite bow stalk was for a buck spotted (both he spotted us and we spotted him) over a mile and a half away.  Ended when I was busted on the wrong side of a mesquite at about 45 yards by a covey of quail hidden in the bushes.  Spot and stalk is definitely the way to go.  Get a javelina tag too if available, they are the true ghosts of the desert (they disappear into the air when you aren't looking!) and double your chances of finding an animal to chase.

Don't think just because you are going to Az that it will be warm.  It never got over 33 when I was there and had 3" of snow. My camper froze up on me. I saw close to 30 deer but no bucks. Still had fun. If you get the chance go to Tombstone there is some pretty cool things there.

Nuctech:   I killed that buck over a water hole.  I sat there all day and shot him late in the afternoon.   I did get a shot at a buck while stalking but missed at about 20 yds.   As you can see by my wool clothes it does get cold there as we hunt in the mountains; usually below freezing in the morning but warms up during the day.  Jim

This is a hunt I have been wanting to do ,is a backpack hunt possible to get into less pressured areas ( haven't done any research myself yet ). Want to start going after a new animal every few years and seems it could be done for Clues fairly cheap.

Sam that is kind of what I plan on doing is to backpack into some areas from a base camp and see what I can find. I have a few units in mind that look to hold decent numbers of both coues and mule deer. I plan on doing what fireman2019 suggested and put in for a javelina tag just in case to cover all shot opportunities.  This is a trip my wife and I have talked about for a couple years. She loves to backpack and has been on several successful hunts in very rough country with me.   Gabe

Like I said I need to start my research on this cause it sounds very doable. Me and my hunting buddy want a new adventure hunt with our backpack gear and if it could be a multiple tag hunt that's even better ( coues and javelina both draw tags ?? ) Anyone setting up a hunt and wants to start at a trail head and go separate ways for the actual hunting then meet back up and compare findings after several days hunt. When I do a hunt like this I like to go for two weeks and cover lots of ground....

Sam the Javelina is a draw tag if you want to hunt them at the same time archery deer hunting is going on.  The tag for coues deer and mule deer in the units I am researching can be purchased over the counter.    Gabe
