axis shaft?

I purchased some used Axis .500 shafts, 30" long with a 50 grain HIT installed. I like to use 175 grain bh's but could use 125's if needed. I have a recurve cut 3/16's past center.

Will these work with my 50# limbs? Or would I need .400 spine? I also have 40 and 45# limbs.

I don't know about your bow and set up but with some 47-52 lbs bows I have I shoot .400 spine.  500 was too weak. {I edited my typo}

But I love the Axis shaft and they are a little forgiving.  I have test shot bows with Axis shafts that were most likely too shift or too weak for that particular bow and they still flew decent.

For my I get new bare shafts and bare shaft tune but cutting down length.  I like 50 gr. brass insert and 150 gr. heads most of the time.

Jack, 400s are stiffer than 500s.

Toby, If I were you, I would go with 400s, but the 500s may work depending on limb efficiency, draw length, point weight and tuning.

I shoot 400's out if my bow 50#s cut 3/16s past center.
175 point 50gr. Insert.  30" long.
If I'm not mistaken the 500's should be a weaker spine.
So either lighter limbs or lighter up front like the 125gr. May stiffen up the 500 enough.

Well, since you already bought the .500 spine and have a variety of limbs and point weights, I think you ought to be telling us what works out of your bow.

You don't mention what your draw length is, but I'd play around with those .500s first to see how things work out. Depending on your draw length, you can stiffen those .500s up a lot by cutting them back 1/4" at a time.

I agree.  Start with the .500s.  They should work with the lighter points. Can always thicken your side plate a little.  Or if you have an ILF, just adjust the cushion plunger a bit. .400s will be too much for 40-45# limbs.

The used shafts should be hear sometime later this week and I have a 28.5" draw length. I have some GT's I am returning to LAS in exchange for some Axis shafts, just trying to get ahead of the game as I have back surgery scheduled for a week from today, so no shooting much till I heal

I use the 500 spine cut to 29 in. I have 100 grain brass inserts, 2 in of footing, and 145 grain points. I use this setup from my Bear TD and my Wes Wallace Longbow. Both are 55@28.
I do find that 400 spine will work at that weight bow but with the more center shot Bear Mag riser.

You should be pretty darn close if you have a 28" draw. I shoot a 49#@28 LB, Axis 500's cut to 29 1/2 with 100 grn inserts and 145 grain field points, they fly great ... if you need to you can trim the nock end a tad

I'd try to get the 500s to work (pretty sure you can) and you can use them with the other limbs also using a different point weight.

I have a 50lb bow recurve cut past center and use the Beaman classic shaft which is very similar to the axis, my draw is 27". The arrows are 500 spine cut to 28.5" with 100gr brass inserts with 145gr practice tips/broadheads and they shoot great out of my bow.  You should be able to get the 500's to work with your bow.

I draw 29" or a little over. I shoot 30" axis 400's with 275 up front with my 50# limbs. I was shooting 225 up front but built out my strikeplate to shoot a heavier head. Bareshaft perfect. I shoot a 30.5" 500 with 250 up front out of my 41# limbs. Bob Lee recurve. To get 500's to shoot out of my heavier limbs i had to go all the way to a 100 tip with standard insert. Just my experience.

Toby, I don't know what kind of bow you are using, but I use similar arrow set ups with heavier bows. I shoot 28" Axis 500's with 235 grains up front (185 grain point plus 50 grain insert)from my Blacktail recurve which pulls about 51# @27" and a performance bowstring. My other Blacktail pulls 57# and likes Axis 400's with 200 grains up front. Bare shaft tune and see what works for you.
