It is best to stay with water-based lacquer and cresting lac. One should not use a combination of paint, or enamel with lacquer. Bohning paints are not the same as water based lacquers. Also, some manufacturer's call their enamel a lacquer. When in doubt, put a drop in lacquer thinner to see if it disburses. When using two different products, you may find it bleeds thru, or won't dry. Duco cement works better on lacquer. If you use stain, test it to see if the stain bleeds thru the lacquer. I have used a clear coat over a water based stain, to prevent it from bleeding thru the cap dip or cresting. Red dye is great for bleeding thru.
