My son has been shooting with me for most of his life, and this year he is ready for the turkeys!! We have been shooting at water balloons for several months now, we blow them up to be about fist size, and put them on the target butts bout turkey high, then we sit on chairs and take turns shooting them. We move the targets around so the range varies from 10 to 15 yards, and just have a blast. There is something very satisfying about hitting the darn things and hearing the pop, not to mention it is a great way to keep the kids focused. This week we will start using the blind to shoot out of, he needs to experience the close quarters shooting that the blind demands....
He is shaping up to be a trad nut like his dad, I did make him shoot a compound a few time so he could make up his mind about what to shoot, but after forcing him to shoot the wheely bow a few time he looked at me and said that he just hated the thing, and only wanted his stick bow. This last summer at the Nebraska Traditional Archers shoot he found a bow he really just had to have, and after some trading with Vince Smith of Lonesome Wind Longbows he ended up with it. What a beauty, and shoots great too! Mix that with some 500 gr. Goldtip arrows, tipped with some S.T.O.S. heads, and I think he will be ready for them tough ol' birds!
