spray over?
« on: March 03, 2015, 09:28:00 PM »
I have a Harrison HSS that i love, but it is WAY too glossy. I'm tired of covering it with camo hockey tape     , and was wondering if i can just spray a low lustre clear over the existing finish, or if it would have to be stripped and completely redone?

Is there a concern with using rattle-can clear and having the previous finish react chemically?

You might want to try rubbing it down with 0000 steel wool first. that will typically nock the shine down a bit.....

If you decide to spray it, its best to find out what you have on it first before you choose a clear coating.  I'd recommend Helmsman spar varnish. It goes over most anything. OOO0 steel wool, or a scotch pad first before spraying.

Just do NOT use spray lacquer.... You'll have a mess on your hands unless it was finished with lacquer.

Satin finish spray polyurethane works well for this.  Minwax is the brand I use with zero issues.  Brian

Again. .  what Kirk was pointing out was that not all finishes are compatible.  If you spray the wrong stuff on top of your already finished bow, it can (might) attack the finish and you may end up with a never drying goo on your bow.

My friend and I lightly wet sanded a bow in similar circumstances, using 0000 steel wool and it worked well for him.  I just paint my bows.

Camo hockey tape on a Harrison!  For shame Darren, for shame   :banghead:

good advice on checking with compatibility.  The last thing you want is a perm-tack, never curing, stick to everything finish on your bow.

At least you aren't looking for a Jerry Pierce rattle can finish, though if it worked for him...

Murray, i've never said i was a finesse player!

My Morrison Shawnee is rattle canned     :scared: , so i think one "Kootenay Special" is enough.

Hope you are getting some melt up there and that the bears are moving soon.
