Gap between shaft & head on FMJ's
« on: March 04, 2015, 11:03:00 AM »
I have some FMJ's I bought to try out that I'm just now getting set up. When I screw in my broadheads or field points, there is a about an inch or so of the threads showing between the base of the shaft and the start of the head.

I see 3rivers sells a broadhead adapter ring, is that designed to eliminate this gap? It seems like it but there are no pictures of it actually on an arrow.

If that's not the solution, what have you guys found that works?

Thanks,
Alex

If there is a gap the inserts were not installed properly.

They should have been installed with the Easton insert tool and set back into the shaft. Not flush with the end.

The adapter ring is meant to taper the transition not to eliminate the gap.

Whoever setup your arrows did it wrong, most likely didnt use thetool that comes w/the arrows.

You need to take the inserts out, clean them and the shaft out very well w/acetone and re set the inserts.

Your heads should be flush with the shaft with no gap when screwed all the way in. Can you take a pic of what you are explaining, maybe I am miss understanding. Did you use the tool to push your inserts down into the shaft, they do not fit flush like Carbon Express or Gold Tips, they are recessed into the shaft for better BH alignment.

It sounds like your inserts were not installed correctly...

There is a little green tool that comes with the inserts that will push the inserts down the shaft to the correct depth allowing points to screw in flush.

It sounds like your inserts were just put in flush... Hopefully they were not put in with epoxy if thats the case!

Hmm yes as I recall the inserts are flush with the end of the shaft. Not sure if they're put in with epoxy or hot melt as I bought them used.

The guy I bought them from sent a tool along with the arrows, so I should be able to reset the insert.

Should I heat the threads on a field point then screw it into the insert and try pulling it out that way since I can't put direct heat on the carbon?

I'll post some pictures later once I get home from work.

Screw in the field point all the way then heat the field point, go slow heat a little then wait a minuet or two for the heat to transfer to the insert, then pull, if wont move, try a little more heat wait and pull again, you don't want the shaft to get to hot. if the inserts were epoxied in the heat will not work.

Thanks wtpops I'll try that. If I remember correctly I think the guy told me they were installed with hot melt so that should do the trick.

If they are, no need to remove them all the way, i would screw the field tip in all but about one thread (still lose) then once they are hot and start to pull out i would unscrew the field point and use the tool and install the insert to the right depth. No need to remove them and then reinstall them.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of those HIT inserts.  I had trouble with them sliding farther down the shaft and the back of the tips peening the front of the shaft.
Try removing the nocks and sliding a drill bit into the shaft.  Bit has to be a large as possible, but yet still slide freely down the shaft.  Hold the nock end of the shaft in your hand and give it a shard downward snap.  Hopefully the drill bit will hit the back of the insert and knock it loose.  It may require several attempts.  This will usually knock out inserts glued with the super glue adhesives.
Now you are free to replace the HITs with the outserts from GoldTip kinetics and Ferr-l-tite cool stick adhesive.  The blue stick stuff.
I have never been able to remove an insert glued with epoxy without ruining the shaft.  Be careful of the amount of heat, as too much will break down arrow shaft and destroy the carbon fibers.

Wheels.  Sounds like you're mushrooming the shaft end from hitting something hard. That can happen with any arrow/insert combination.  That's why a lot of folks foot carbons with an inch or two of aluminum.

I've never had a problem with the inserts on Easton Axis shafts.  I've bounced them off of trees without pushing the insert further into the shaft.  A direct hit on a concrete wall did mushroom the end 1/4-inch of the shaft.
