I got a pair of surplus wool pants the other day, any tricks to getting the smell out?

Air them out, a lot. Could wash them in cool water and Woolite first, but only if they're plenty large for you now. Regardless of how careful one is with wool, over time, it just tightens up (shrinks) a little.

Hang them in the smoke of a camp fire for a couple hours... that will do it.
