Reasonable Gold Tip setup for tuning?
« on: March 06, 2015, 12:02:00 AM »
Hi Gang!

I just bought a 47.5#@29 Border Covert Hunter and I'm would like to tune up my first batch of arrows for both 3D shooting and hunting.  From reading a bunch of setups, I want to try 225gr up front ( 125gr tip, 100gr insert ), a .340 GT Hunter Shaft, and 3 x 5" shield or parabolic fletches.  Does that sound like it would work ok the CH ( Border CHs supposedly like a heavier arrow, akin to one from a bow 10# heavier  ).

Thoughts on this setup?  Would GT inserts allow me to unscrew the tips and swap in lighter/heavier points or other weights for fine tuning?  Do any of you add weight to the back of the arrow as well or usually just tip and insert?

Many thanks in advance!

.340's are going to be too stiff, unless that border is cut waaaaay past center. you can switch out points to whatever you want. The weights screw into the back of the insert from the nock end of the shaft with a real long allen wrench. I have no experience with adding nock end weight, but know that some folks do that.

I have used GT weights on the front and back.  They work well, but they can be a pain.

I have to agree, 340 shafts seem like they would be a little stiff.  I would think a 55/75 shaft or a 400 would be closer.  I'd bare shaft to be sure though.

At that poundage I would be shooting 3555s with a 50 grain insert and either 200 or 225 tips.  It has worked for me all the way up to 54#.

Border CH is cut past center and at 29" draw would require a stiffer than 'normal' setup. I think the 340 would work probably full length and may need a little more tip weight. I have always needed stiffer arrows than most.

I'm shooting GT trads 3355 (.400) at 29.25 " with 175gr up front. 3x5" Fletch and they are perfect for my 50#@28 HH Wesley.

I would think the 55/75's would be your best arrow. I shoot 28" 55/75's with 50gr insert and 200gr field point out of my 55lb palmer. I would think the longer arrow that you need would reduce the spine so it would be fine for the 47.5lb bow.

I agree with katman. I just ran those numbers through Stu's calculator and I think they will work fine for you. Start full length and trim back as necessary.

I often use GT internal weights to fine tune my arrows on both the point and nock end.  To use them on the nock end, you install GT nock adapters.  The nock plugs into one end of the nock adapter, and the weight screws in the other end.  The nocks used with the nock adapter are a little shorter than nocks used directly in the shaft.  I wouldn't use much supplemental weight on the nock end, but it can sometimes be helpful to add a 20 grain weight if the arrows needs to be stiffened up a little.  More than that and I would prefer to reduce the weight on the tip end or shorten the shaft.

i use roughly that same setup on my 53#@28"  RER recurves.

probably gonna be a good bit too stiff for 47.5#@29". 5575s might work better.

edited to add: i shoot mine full length.

That bow is a very high performer.  I beleve the arrow will work fine and may actually be a little light in spine.

It will shoot like most of the bow listed above 10 pounds heavier.

I shoot GT 75/95 with 200 gr up front at 50 @ 30 and they are almost weak.
