64" or 62" Whip & ?????

Hey all

I'm in search of 2 new bows. I have a Toelke SS and absolutely love it but want to explore a bit more (Terrible bug in the trad community) Round here in South Africa trad archers are few and far between so no local club to try out different bows from fellow archers.

Bow 1: "the Stalking stick" I've decided on a Toelke whip based on all your post here, just not sure what lenght? I have a 30" draw and want something that is not too long to limit options but also not too short that it inhibits me from enjoying a whip at its best. A good all rounder. Need advice on length please?

Bow2: "The Hide Hornet" Hide/stand bow is gotta be the Toelke Chinook? Also excellent reviews and purpose built, short, quiet and good cast. Need alternate suggestions please or do I have it spot on?

I should also mention that I've never shot a longbow before, but imagine that the SS would not be far off grip wise?

As usual your input would be highly appreciated

I imagine the 64" whip would be best for your draw. Mine is 30.5" and I love my 64.  Smoothest draw ever and zero hand shock.

Just my two cents but give Dan Toelke a call.  I know you're international and the call will cost a couple of bucks but it is WELL worth it to talk with him.   When I ordered a classic whip I had some similar questions about length, wood materials, etc.  he is absolutely fantastic and a wealth of knowledge.  

You'll get some good info on here but I'd suggest going straight to the source.

If you get the Longbow the classic grip will be alot like your Super Static.He could customize the grip to be just like your Super Static anyway.

I actually hunt with a Kestral thats only 52" and I draw 0ver 29.I am pretty picky and this bow shoots very well for me or I would not hunt with it.

I would bet the 58 inch Chinook would be pretty good for you.I had a few 60 incher chinooks that were very nice.He stopped making that length.I even had a 58 inch one piece toelke that was the predessor to the Chinook that shot well for me.

I have only shot friends Toelke Longbows that were 64" and they were not the HS model.So I have never tried the 62 incher.

I ran a thread asking about the HS model.It got good reports.Guys seemed to like the 64 inch model alot that responded to my inquiry.A 64 inch longbow is typically gonna be a tad longer than a 64 inch recurve.

A 62 incher might work very well for you.But might not be ideal?You might be able to live with that though as it might shoot well for you.Especially if you have a good clean release.

I do agree about talking to the bowyer for his opinion.

Thanks for the input steelhead definitely helps to steer the direction. I plan on giving the toelke's a call during next week when I'm back at work.

I have a 64" classic whip and really like it, although I only have 28" draw.  I think longer is more stable, and the whip is dead quiet and really light limbs so extra length does not seem to come with any drawbacks. My next bow purchase will be a 64" takedown whip (not the classic)

I have had both the 64" and a 62". I Draw a strong 29 1/2"-30".  Both were exceptional but I end up selling the 64". I Shot the 62" at least as well.

I draw 30" and go for the 64" Whip. Dan has said that the 62" whip will do well with a 30" draw but I shoot 3 under and it was recommended because of that to go to the 64". I've had 64" Standard grip, Classic grip and Standard grip 64" HS Whips. Look real close at the 64 HS Whip. Real close! That is the 64" one to have in my opinion.
For a 30" draw, don't over look his 66" Super D if you are looking at the Hill "style". I love my Super D!
There should be some pics on another recent whip thread, just search. Tough decision!

Oh, the standard grip is thinner in the palm and a tad lower wrist than your SS grip. His standard Whip grips are superb.

No doubt, 64" on the Whip.  58" Chinook should be ok as well.  58" Javaman Elkheart would be great too.  The SS is probably me least favorite now in the Toelke line.  I'm quite confident that you will be very pleased with either of my above suggestions.

Biathlonman, The SS is smooth and stable but seems to only allow a small margin of error to me, I love it don't get me wrong, I just think ill love it more if my form is more consistent and solid. I'm intrigued by the Elkhart, but am sure there is a long waiting list...

A 58" bow is too short for this guy. Recurve wise, no less than 62". I don't like the finger pinch.

I shoot a shade over 29" with a 58" chinook with zero issues.  30" is going to be getting a pretty tight string angle but I don't think you'll have any issues with stacking.  For me a 58" chinook feels like a 64" whip.

I had a 60" chinook and loved it so I ordered a new one a bit heavier.  When I got it strung up, the length is the same.  Both bows use the same string.  Not sure why it is a 58" now, but there is no difference in overall length.  I draw 30" and have no issues with the chinook at all.

As to the whips, I have a 62" whip HS.  I wish it was 64".   There is just a bit of stack, not bad, but I can feel it as the bow is at the top of my draw weight limit.

I will get a 64" HS  when I can get this one sold..

Appreciate the feedback, my heart set on a 64" whip. Do you loose any dl with the whip? have seen a couple of guys mention that they loose an inch or so when they shoot longbow?

The chinook I'm still playing with in my mind, I'm scared I like the longbow too much and in that case may get the Elkhart

I have both the Whip HS an the Chinook in 58", both standard grips,very close in # at mt 29+" draw length. I shoot 3 under and don't notice any more finger pinch with them than any of my 62" bows ,with my crapy release.
I would strongly recommend the T/D option. I have several bows with the bolt and Dan does the finest job of all. Very close fit and so nice to travel with.
