Axis spine help
« on: March 13, 2015, 07:08:00 PM »
I have several bows and will need several shafts, hoping to get all to come out around 10gpp. I have some break off 50-75 HIT's. Three bows, 40, 45, and 50. I draw 28.5".

I shoot 125 grain heads.

I'm thinking .600's for the 40#er, .500's for the 45# bow, and .400's left pretty long with 75 grain adaptor for the 50# bow.

Shooting a Hoyt Dorado cut about 7/16 past center, so can play with centershot a little.

I don't expect anyone to have information on all of these, but help on any would be appreciated.

Thanks
Toby

Depending on your draw length you might get by with 600 spine on the 40lb and 45lb. I would try the 500 spine on the 50lb.

I shoot Easton Axis a lot but am NOT the resident Tradgang arrow expert.  I would be surprised if you need the 600 for any of your bows.  I shoot 400 out of a few bows that are 45 to 52 lbs @28".  When bare shafting I had to cut the 500 way to short to make them stiff enough.  I normally go with 75 gr. brass insert and 145 gr. field points.

In my opinion I would get a dozen 500's and bare shaft tune them for the 40 lb bow.  Shoot some 500's out of the 45 and 50 lb bows and see if they show way weak and go from there.  If you would have to cut them down to far to stiffen them then order some 400's. Or start with 400's and do the reverse. I bet you only need 400 and 500, not all three shafts.

By varying length, insert weight and point weight it would be possible to make 400's fly perfect out of the 45 and 50 lbs bows, I have done it. People say 500's should work but for me personally I have to cut them way to short.  That has been my experience.

I would also start with the .500 spine. I find for Me Axis shafts are the easiest to tune. No expert either but by varying point weight I can use the same arrows from three different bows. I use the .400 spine also for my 55-60# bows.
I use the 100 grain brass inserts and 2 in of alum footing.

With that bow being cut to 7/16" past center I think the 600's are out. You are definitely going to want the 500's for both the 40 and 45 pound limbs, and depending on what point weight you have with the brass 75 grain insert you may want the 400's for the 50 pound limbs. The bow being cut that far past center shot is really going to allow you to shoot a much stiffer arrow than a bow cut even to center.

I think I will put an adjustable rest of some kind on it, so will move the centershot out some.

I don't know if I can get away with a single spine and still maintain the arrow weight I want. I don't mind getting two spines, just not sure if I will need .600's and .500's, or .500's and .400's.

Wow, maybe .500's are as stiff as I will need?

It all depends what performance level you are willing to live with...the most important information you have left out is what you are using for a string...as an example I have one bow that tunes fine with 400 spine arrows with a B50 string and needs 300 spine arrows with a BCY-X string

DDave
I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42
