Different brand feathers on same arrow...?
« on: March 20, 2015, 06:34:00 PM »
I've got a few handfuls of bearpaw 4" feathers  and plan on making some new arrows but want a particular color that bearpaw doesn't have in 4"... Could I use a truFlight ( or amg) etc with my bear-paw on the same arrows (4-4") .?  Just curious as to has mixed and matched different brand feathers  and if it may effect flight .. Shield cut.. Wasn't sure if all companies cut their shield cuts exactly the same height, etc... Thanks, Seth

As long as they are the same wing I can't see a problem.  I Use wild turkey and goose feathers all the time.  One thing I do is that I sand every quill down so they are thinner.  If you do that then they will probably be real close.

Won't affect flight but the shapes may vary. All companies don't use the same patterns.

Probably won't make that big of a difference. For me I just don't like to mix precut feathers.I have mixed Tru-fight with Bearpaw, but these were full length that I burned.

I have mixed Truflite and Gateway to get the colors I wanted. Shape of feathers could be an issue as for looks. Just never mixed wings.

Yeah, they may vary a little in height for example but I know I can't shoot the difference!

I have used Tru Flight barred and AMG solids on my own arrows because I like TF's barred and AMG's colors.  The cut is so similar you can't tell they are different brands, I'm talking 5" shields.

On customer arrows I never mix brands though.

Same wing, same cut, same length, they'll fly fine.  However, slight variations in height, cut angles, etc. may detract from appearance and could lead to increased feather noise when the arrow is shot.

I bought a bunch of natural barred turkey feathers from someone on this website, and use them as the cock feather with colored feathers from Tru Flight, etc. Seems to work fine.
