What material was used for strings back then?
Not sure when dacron came along.

I think it was mostly silk or linen? Dacron was trademarked in 1951.

In Pope's book he mentions linen. I'm sure like all things there were radicals out there trying different things, but I think linen was an industry standard.

Don't know if it is still available but in the 60's I used waxed linen carpet thread and made strings.

In "Hunting With The Bow and Arrow" pope notes that he uses #12 Barbours Linen. He apparently made string up to 90 strands.
