Anyone having success with Hogs in MS? Post up

Been wanting to get out and do some Hog hunting since Turkey season started but, all the rain and snow melt from up north has kept the Pascagoula river up preventing access into my hunting area.

So in the mean time while me and my buds are waiting to get out would love to see and hear your adventure if you've been out.

I've been meaning to go after them myself, but haven't gotten around to it. Might try to get some bait out this week though. We don't have large numbers of hogs yet, but there are a few.

With all of the rain here in the Delta it has been impossible to get out to Dahomey NWR. If you pull off the access roads into a designated parking area the chances of getting out of the mud is highly unlikely. At this time MDWFP has tested the hogs in Bolivar County and found that they have tested positive for pseudorabies and swine bruccellosis. If it ever clears up and dries out I will get back out there and shoot a few. I won't process them for food; just reduce the large number of them. There are seven other zoonotic diseases that hogs carry but I don't know if MDWFP test them for those. Be careful handling these animals when you harvest them.

School me on the danger of pseudo rabies and swine bruccellosis?  Is this just in your area or do you know if they have tested throughout the state?

Doc, No baiting on Public land even if it is a natural source brought in, at least that's my understanding.

John, I'm not an epidemiologist and physician but from what I have found on the internet, pseudorabies is a herpes virus and not transmittable to humans. However swine bruccellosis (a bacterial infection)is transmittable to humans and occurs when hunters process the wild hogs without protection, do not take care when processing the meat, and do not cook the meat properly(temperature). If you would like I can e-mail you a copy of the Mississippi map showing the areas affected by these diseases.

GADS!  Even the things that most need to be reduced and can provide good grub, are repleat with nasties that can harm or kill US!

Actually, many pigs carry these diseases. Many other animals we eat have parasites etc. It all depends on care in processing, storage and cooking. Most of these thing affect us so adversely these days because we have sterilized ourselves so much. back in the day, all of our ancestors lived with this stuff.

we dont have any hogs or turkeys but I went shed hunting the other day. no sheds and not hardly a deer track. hope they come back by Oct

Every inch of land in this area is leased to hunting clubs, so it's hard to get access to land with hogs.

I've talked to a few landowners that have hog problems, but they're looking for someone with a machine gun to go in and wipe 'em out.  

Every now and then, the local newspaper will have an article about how wild hogs are taking over and destroying everything, but dang if I can find a place to hunt them.

You have a point on our immune systems are less strong than our ancestors, but there were LESS types of bad juju back then...and the ones that were bad, cholera, typhus, plague, they didn't have cures, they just died.

Well you know us Cajuns here, we eat any and everything. Only ones here that get thrown are killed by state and fed nuisance folks. Everybody else eats em. I try to use common sense when cleaning/cooking pigs, but cheat way too much, need to gear up better when cleaning. When I hunt my Miss and Bama leases, the guys there keep some and throw some. If I'm there, we're keeping em!
