Kwyk Styk shooters (help please)
« on: April 10, 2015, 02:31:00 PM »
Just got a "new to me" KS from Joe on the classifieds. (Thanks Joe!)

Specs are 53#28 and I draw 27". Bow is 56". Bow is tillered even. I shoot 3 under.

I have 400 spined GTs (55/75) and Traditional Only 400's. Arrows are 29" valley of nock to BO broadhead.

The bow is quiet and fast (to my eye, not chronoed yet) but arrow flight is a bit erratic.

Three under shooters...
What is your brace height?
What is your nocking point measurement?
Arrow spine?
Draw length?

Any other pertinent info you can share?

Thanks,
Wayne

I would try 500's cut to 28". That should be stiff enough for 50 to 51 lbs at 27" draw with 100 to 125 grain heads. I shoot 500's in my 45 lb at 28" and I draw 29" with my arrows cut to 30" and they fly great.
What gives me wings? Flying with my arrows over and over again. And never giving up...For giving up means not believing...

Not sure on how a kwyk styk riser is cut, BUT I shoot a cut to center longbows at 50lbs @ 27"s and the best arrow flight I have achieved is from a 29.25" gt trad 3555 with 50 grain brass insert and 150 grain head.  My bow that shoots that combo braces at 8"s. nock height is 11/16ths.

Arrows are too stiff. You need 35/55 spine, and minimum of 260 grains up front. Also suggest leaving the arrows 29".

I agree those arrows are too stiff (or too short) for that bow. I just finished tuning up some 5575s for an EFOC setup for my 46# bow. I'm running 31 7/8", with 400 gr up front and they fly like bullets.

If I reduce the point weight to a more common weight like 175gr, I'd need a much heavier bow. If I cut them back to 29", I'd need a LOT more bow than 50-51#.

What Joe Skipp does not know about a Kwyk Styk does not need to be known...other than Jack himself of course

Doing physical therapy right now for the back Tim.

Been able to shoot with no "additional" pain. Thanks though for your concern.

And,thanks for the help guys. I fletched up a Traditional Only 500 spine shaft last evening. Anxious to try it today.

Set my brace to 8 1/4"... adjusted noc to 5/8" high.

Sounds right to me. I will try the 100 grain brass insert with 175 grain point. That should put me a tad over 500 grains total and about 10gpp.

Appreciate your assistance Joe.

Start with your brace height at 7 1/2" and adjust a twist at a time from there. You will end up within 1/8" either way depending on your release.
The kwik styks are awesome, I have a dozen if you are wondering if I have any experience with them. They are my go to bow. Three fingers under will affect your nock placement from mine. Shoot a bare shaft a few times at 5 yards then move back a bit until you are drilling the center at 20 yards.
Thats the quickest way to determine if the shaft is way too stiff.
I adjust brace height by sound, it will go "quiet". Seems to be the best.

Thanks Terry. I messed up by fletching and cutting the only 500 spine arrow I had before shooting it bare shafted.

However, it really shoots well. After only a few days I am shooting the KS better than any bow I have ever owned, and I've owned a few.

I am getting ready to order new arrows and will definitely do the bareshafting before fletching.

Again... I really appreciate the help.

The thing I find the most fascinating about Jack is that he is still building bows, still bowhunting, at age 83...we can all take encouragement from that

Hey Wayne, I'm just catching up on TG.  I'm really happy to hear that you're enjoying the bow.  I hope you enjoy many successful hunting seasons with it.

Joe.

Thanks Joe. I am hoping to finally break my turkey jinx this year. I've taken bear, elk, lots of deer and small game... but have yet to anchor a tom.

I'm watching a longbeard just about everyday from my front porch.

I'll be sure to show off the bow in the hero pics!
Good luck to you too.
