Deer Hunting Campgrounds In Ohio?
« on: April 21, 2015, 10:07:00 AM »
Hey folks I am itching to set up a wall tent and hunt for 3 to 4 days straight in Ohio. I may wind up going with some friends who hunt with compounds and stay in a hotel, but truth be told I would prefer a wall tent and be able to hunt from camp on some public land.

Eastern Ohio to central Ohio would be preferred but Im open to other suggestions. Unfortunately, I already chomping at the bit for deer hunting even though theres still half a year of waiting to go.

Without giving up your secret honey hole I would appreciate any suggestions on some public property away from large cities and some decent scenery.

I know of the changes in quality and quantity of the deer and hunting hunting but Im ok with that, I have confidence in myself that if there are a few around Ill get to at least see some.just looking for a change of scenery for a short get away.

        Thanks, Izzy

Don't know about a campground, but I've got a yard.

There are no deer in Ohio but you're welcome to camp LOL!!!

Actually they have been successful in reducing the herd and continue to reduce allowed # of deer through several mechanisms.

I am thinking of heading south to do a wall tent hunt too.  Southern Ohio.  I will be watching this thread for ideas as I have no clue either, and I live here!

Back in the 1990's we would rent a cabin on Dillon Lake outside of Zanesville. Was very good hunting in that area back then.

Me and a hunting buddy have been planning on doing the same thing on our off years from our Colorado trips.  This year we are headed back to Colorado so we will probably plan on going next year.

Ohio is beautiful country, another world from what I know. Where I live I have to work hard to be more than 25 yards from high human activity, only a few wooded parks that are usually crowded. The last time I hunted Ohio around Marysville, I was awestruck by the road that I could see from my tree stands. Sometimes two hours would pass without a car going by. Thats a rare luxury in these parts.

Izzy,

We have a lot of state and federal land in the southeast and east central Ohio.  I see that you've found a camp, but if you ever want to do some exploration, give me a PM and I can turn you on to a few spots that we frequent.

I wish I could join you this year. I lived in central Ohio all my life and had some great privet ground to hunt. I had to move to AZ three years ago and can't find trad hunters out here . There nothing like camping and hunting in the same area . Good luck.

For those watching this thread, southeast Ohio has many, many opportunities to camp and deer hunt. There is much state and national forest land available with primitive camping allowed in a majority of areas. The deer population is down (by design) all over Ohio, but it is not severely so in the southeast which is lightly populated, hilly and sometimes rugged. Most guys want to know where to show up and hunt, which is a mistake. I think one key is to visit a prospective hunting area NOW or before spring foliage happens, and again during the late summer. Schedule a couple trips to find and learn an area. Nothing will ever replace time afield and boot-leather investment. Finally, discount the naysayers who would discourage you. I have friends who travel in from out of state and they (stickbow) hunt deer with steady success.
