TD recurve v TD longbow
« on: May 01, 2015, 03:35:00 PM »
Why are mass produced TD recurves so much more popular than TD longbows? There are no cheap TD longbows, the cheapest is around 400. Why is this? You'd think that trad companies like samick would realuze the popular demand for TD longbows.

I think because longbows are suppose to look one piece to most folks.  That's the draw...the attraction.  Two piece longbows that look like one piece are cool too cause they still have the one piece longbow lines.

That's my 2 cents.

I think Terry is probably on to something.  They just don't look like a longbow is suppose to.

Plus, it seems that recurves are a bit more popular generally than longbows.  Probably a combination of a number of things.

With that said, I've got a half dozen or so 3 pc longbows.  They are my favorite bows.  The durability, quietness, and shootability of a longbow, plus the mass and convenience of a takedown recurve.  Hard to beat that combination.

I am partial to three piece longbows myself.  I like the added weight and how easy they are to pack for a trip or to load on a horse.  I have a 3 piece takedown longbow by Dwayne at Thunderhorn that is my go-to bow.  It is quiet, fast, stable with the add3ed riser weight and just slings a heavy arrow with authority where I look.  Today, in my opinion, there is not a whole lot of difference between modern three piece longbows and recurves unless you get into static tips in which case a little speed /efficiency may be gained.

TD longbows really only appeal to hunters in a broader sense.  There are some real fast ones that approach recurve performance but you have to realize the target archers out there will gravitate toward recurves.  3 pc longbows are a niche item for the most part for us animal lovers LoL.

While I'm a big longbow fan, I have a strong preference for a 2-piece over a 3-piece. Part of the longbow itch is the clean lines and light/pointability of them as compared to larger and heavier recurves. Take down is awesome for travel but NOT awesome enough for me to want the extra riser mass.

I have a 3pc Stalker Coyote with longbow limbs and it is  top notch. I just recently picked up a Thunderhorn Heartstopper on here (1/4 away) thank you and it is a fantastic bow. I personally like the extra weight of the riser. I would think if Samik and others would offer them at the same price of their recurves they would probably get people to buy them just to try one. I would

I too have noticed that a 3 piece recurve can be bought for $200+ but if a 3 piece longbow is desired, it has to be a custom, $400 (atleast) new, or close to it used.  I think the term is cottage market.
