Primitive bow. ?
« on: May 02, 2015, 09:01:00 PM »
What do you consider a primitive Bow ?.   No backing of any kind ,some skin just for looks , sinyew or wood backing to keep it from splintering. Or just no man made materials and no laminations or some PVC pipe with a string on it.?  Just wondering. Some clubs say one thing while others say something ells. And some shoots say one thing and others say something ells. I really don't care where they put me I just shoot for fun any way. Just wondering.

To me, any all wood bow would be good, but others think only single pcs of wood with no lamonations. I just go with whatever the rules are at whatever club I'm shooting at that weekend, and don't swest it! Guys have been arguing over this for a loooooooo g time! I have seen two grown men nearly go the throwing fists at a shoot over just this question!

I'm sorta like Bisch on this - go by local club rules. Backed and laminated bows have been around for thousands of years. Actually, the laminated horn bows are of old design but are rather sophisticated, so are they actually "primitive" bows? There is room for a lot of opinions on this matter. To some, just about any bow made with non-synthetic materials qualifies. I can live with that.

i'm not a club shooter, just a hunter. to me a primitive bow is a selfbow or a bow backed with and entirely made from natural materials.
also it must have a natural cordage string. for what is a bow without a string? a stick. the string is just as important to keep primitive. i'm suprised how many go primitive with all their gear but use a dacron or other type of synthetic string. that defeats the purpose for me personally. i'm not sure why this is so because it's not hard to make a good quality rawhide string.

I'm you guys  on this. Was just wondering on others opinions. Good point about the string. Should I ask what's a primitive arrow?.

I shoot a horn bow made with traditional methods.  With a hemp string if that's not primitive enough I dont care to play with them.

I think any bow made without glass or carbon should be considered primitive.
