Hip Quivers for Hunting...What Options Do We Have??
« on: May 08, 2015, 09:17:00 AM »
Hey all,

I think I'd like to get a hip quiver to hunt with.  I used to use one of the less expensive ones with that fake fur around the top of it many years ago.  Now all I have is a bow quiver and a home made Asbell style I made out of a compound quiver I found at a pawn shop for $3.

I know the best one out there is the Absorkee quiver.  Really nice quiver for sure.  I think they are out of my price range at the moment though.

I'd like to see what else is out there that is more affordable.  Is there some kind of attachment to the belt that lets you use a Quickee Quiver?  I seem to recall seeing something like that in a few pictures.

What other hip quivers for broadheads can you all recall?

Which one have you used that you liked?

Any info you can add would be appreciated.

Thanks all.

This is not exactly a hip quiver, but I settled on a Great Northern Sidekick Quiver, and like it a lot!

Nalajr,

If it is an option, I'd save up for the Absorkee.  It is a spectacular design and really snakes through brush without hanging up.  I've got one and it is one of my favorite hunting quivers.

I've also got the Sidekick that Bisch mentioned.  In all honesty, I probably use my Sidekick a little more than my Absorkee purely because of the different carrying options.

Through deer season, one day I may be carrying a Milenium Tree seat, while another day I may be carrying a Big Jim's seat or have my Waldrop Pacseat on my back.  The Sidekick offers multiple carrying options.

You can't go wrong with either one.

I like both the GN sidekick and Tim Roberts simpler version of the Absorkee quiver.  I believe Tim uses Mark Baker's clip on his belt quivers.

With that said..if you want a cheaper version of the GN side kick, pick up a used GN strap on quiver (usually available in the classifieds) to attach to a dowel rod or in my case a spike elk horn.  For shoulder strap, I use a piece of heavy cord and tie in an adjustable slip knot.  The curve of the elk horn fits nicely around my waist...tippit

I'm glad you brought this up. I've used a back quiver for a long time, but I do like the idea of a hip quiver. I'm going to give one a try one of these days. Thanks.

I wonder if I could make one out of an old compound bow quiver that I've had in the closet for years? Just thought about it.

Then again, it may hang to straight up and down, and be in the way.

This is the best setup I've used by far for a hip quiver, now I've switched to bow quiver and won't go back unless I'm using a bow that won't accept a bow quiver like my Bear 76'r. You could maybe make something like it with your old compound quiver. Try to replicate the angle I have to the hip adapter, arrow go through the brush well that way. Make the hip adapter out of heaviest saddle leather you can get your hands on.

Neet makes an affordable one in various camo patterns. They're all over the auction site. 3Rivers sells an all leather one for around $75. I believe they can all be used right or left.

That's great, thank you! Mine is very similar to the one in your picture. Just need to find some heavy leather. I have a buckskin, and another hide of some kind , not sure what it is, but they'd both be too light. I'll have to figure a way to attach it to the quiver so it stays put too, but I'm sure I can figure something out. Thanks again David, that's a big help, I appreciate it.

Sorry Nala, didn't mean to change the direction of the thread on you.

I made one years ago like Chuck Adams uses. I used parts from a bow quiver. I found it to bulky and in the way. I tried one of those holster types also. It had a tie down string. When you walked it looked like a Tom turkey in full strut. I like the type that Asbell sells. I travel lite, so it works for me.

Larry,
The orgin of the Absorkee Quiver was the Mark Baker Caddy Bracket. Some years ago, when Mark gave me the Caddy Bracket to start making them, it was intended that they go on a Kwicky Kwiver, it was my dislike of the Kwicky that lead to the Absorkee Quiver. If you are interested, I make and sell just the Caddy Bracket.
Thanks,
Tim

MADE is past tense.  Mark sold the design for the Kwiver Kaddy to Farr West Leather as the Absorkee, as I understand.

I've got one of Mark's "contraptions" that I absolutely love.  I've also got something that my brother-in-law made me for 2-blade heads.  I'll try to get a picture this weekend and post it.

They are easy and cheap to make, just get a quickee quiver and a heavy piece of leather.  Fold the leather at the top, contact glue the leather together leaving the top open for the belt loop, then drill holes thru the leather to except the part of the quickee that is suppose to attach to the bow. Attach the bow part of the quiver to the leather with bolts and nuts and there you go, very cheap and functional. I used one for years. if you want the arrows to lay more behind your back just move the quiver on your belt. Just clean the hood of debris once in a while and check your broadheads for rust and touch up as necessary.
