Sticky wax in loops..makes a "pop" noise
« on: May 29, 2015, 09:16:00 AM »
Hey Gang,

I have a small problem with noise.
My recurve makes a pop noise when I draw.
It happens at about 2/3 draw..or maybe a little past.
I've figured out it's the wax on one loop sticking to the bow (flemish).
When the bottom of the loop lifts from the limb it pops a bit.

I looked the bow over really well for splinters etc. and it's fine.

I've rubbed the string loops to try to move the wax around a bit..didn't help.
There doesn't seem to be an excess of wax or anything.
..just something about the angles/force on that area on this particular bow.

And I tried flipping the string over of course.

I'm thinking of rubbing a little talc or graphite powder on the loops. My thought is that the powder will stick to the wax so the wax can't stick to the bow.

I'm thinking these powders won't be too abrasive to the string.
Also thought about putting something on the limbs too..but I'd rather try to fix the string.

I have bow hush on the string..this noise is coming from just under the loops..not from the back of the limbs where the string lays at brace.

Feel kinda dumb asking for help on this..but I'd hate to ruin a string experimenting.

What are your thoughts on this Gang?

Thanks

John

Rob Lee recommends this on B-50 strings, soak the 2 ends 8" in lacquer thinner, it will discolor it but removes the wax. You can go to Bob Lee's web site, go to video's, bow care & tuning, Silencing. I hope this helps!

Talc will do it.  Howard Hill used to use cashmere bouquet talcum powder for strings and glove.  I use johnsons baby powder and it keeps the wax off my bow.

thanks for the comments guys.
I should've stated this before..the string is made from b-55.

I was/am a little worried about removing the wax as it does help protect the string a bit.

Obviously, the talc would have to be reapplied now and then..especially after a wet hunt...which is no big deal.

The excess wax should shoot out before long.

Don't use a solevent, to remove!

Like Chad posted and this time of year warm weather, should'nt be an issue, noise, pop!

Could be in an overlay or other place in the limb.

Talcum powder works.  If you like your strings to smell extra purty, sprinkle some Shower To Shower bath powder on them.  Women will come from miles around.  You may never actually see them but be assured they'll be close by.

Rub in a small amount of vaseline. The noise will disappear instantly.

Thanks for the help gents.
I got it figured out.

Somehow I had got a small amount of string wax in the very top part of the groove.

I couldn't see it at all on the bow..must be going blind.
I was actually scraping my thumbnail down the bow to check for snags and ran into the wax "glob".

After removing that all was good.

I really feel like a dunce on this one..lol
I tell ya though, I just couldn't see that wax for the life of me.

Good ideas brought forward here though.

You all are great!
