New noise, please help!
« on: June 26, 2015, 03:27:00 PM »
Hello everyone!

I have been shooting the following set up:

Tall Tines 60" recurve, long riser. 51# @ 28". I am pulling 30" so more or less 55 - 56# at my draw length. Shooting 31.5" BOP CE heritage 250 (.381 spine deflection) shafts with 245 - 250 grs upfront and 3, 5" feathers and standard bohning nock. I am almost at 11 GPP and the arrows weigh about 610 - 620 grs with a +-20% FOC. String nock is exactly 1/2" above square and have been shooting it that way ever since I got the bow. No need for a second nock under.

From one day to the next it went from being dead silent with the stock string and wool puff silencers to making a very frustrating noise and I have done everything I can to try to make it dissappear.

Here are the points I have gone through:

1. I shoot Split finger and bow is tillered for such.
2. My form hasn't changed and have corroborated on a 50# Black Widow and a 35# Hoyt pro Hunter.
3. The cork padding is as was the first day I got the bow.
4. I bareshafted the same arrows again just in case and they are still as were originally.
5. Brace Height is set at 7.5" and hasn't changed.
6. No wear at all on the shelf and just normal wear on strike plate, both Velcro. Feathers don't show any frizzle at al.
7. I checked th glue lines and they seem to be OK.
8. Glove is perfect, not showing any sign to change it.

I have no idea what to do next!! Please help me!!
Thanks,
Patrick.

If you are SURE the bow hasn't changed, then you have. Have someone else watch you shoot.

What kind of noise?  Have someone stand off to the side when you shoot--they may be able to help pin-point the source.

The sound is like a short thump as soon as the arrow leaves the bow. I had someone see me shoot but I don't think she knew what to look for. I don't have anyone to shoot it for me but I recorded two six arrow series shots and don't see a difference from previous recordings with the same set up. I usually hunt alone so this is the best way I have found to see how everything's working. I'm still trying to figure this new thump out... I shot bare fingerred and it still hates me lol

Get a magnifying glass and check all of your glue lines again.  I had a bow that was near new and went from being quiet to having a ting type sound at the shot, to eventually making a sound at 3/4 draw.  looked like a mar on the finish but was really a crack on the shelf in a knot under the clear finish.  I had someone else draw the bow to watch it and sure enough it opened up at 3/4 draw and ran up the glue line vertically thru the riser about 1".

I'm guessing a crack or delamination too, but I hope I'm wrong.
Maddog Mountaineer 57# and Prairie Predator 52# Wow!, Samick Sage 35 - 60#,  I'm learning.

Thanks to all that chimed in. I spoke to Brian and having gone through the usual points that might contribute to such "new noise" found the problem to be on my end.

Some time ago I lent the bow to a friend who  unstrung the bottom limb instead of the top one. This caused minute checking in the glass near the tips. Brian, very generously offered to try and fix the problem outside warranty. Great bow, great guy! Lesson learned: do not let my friend even breathe heavily on this bow again.

Thanks to all! Thank you Brian for your patience and gesture!

Glad Brian figured it out for you! You won't find a more knowledgable guy and honourable businessman!

Yep. These new strings are like steel cable. Add the winching power of the limbs as the small loop of the lower loop slides down the ever widening limb and no bow could withstand that. Always have to be careful stringing and unstringing any bow these days.

Don't follow?? Why would unstringing the bottom limb cause checking in the glass.
We are all here because we are not all there.
