I drew aan antelope tag in wyoming! now I need help
« on: July 02, 2015, 06:22:00 PM »
I burned my points in wyoming and drew a 92,96 antelope tag. I will be hunting with my dad and he wants to rifle hunt. So we will go a couple days early so I can bowhunt. If anyone has any info for these areas and wouldnt mind sharing I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Have you contacted the Rock Springs and/or Green River Chambers of Commerce? The Red Desert is known for big antelope,, but  with the checkerboard land pattern, you have to know who owns the land. The C of Cs will probably have landowners that will permit access. Good luck.
If you don't like cops, next time you need help, call Al Sharpton

Call the Green River WY Game and Fish Dept. Office at 307-875-3223 and ask to speak to the wildlife biologist for the  area, and also the Game warden.  The game warden who worked that area for many years recently retired, but others will be able to help you out.  I was the Game warden west of there in Kemmerer in the '90's but didn't know the area you're talking about.  There is a fair amount of BLM land if I remember correctly, but WGFD staff can help you out. I moved for a family reason, and still miss western Wyoming.

Make sure you ask about the Onx Hunt Maps when you talk to the WGFD. I bought them and they show you all private and public lands.

I'll be hunting across the highway from you in area 91.  There are vast areas of BLM land in the northern area of your units and access is not a problem.  The checkerboard land is in the south.  Antelope numbers are pretty far down right now but I know you can still find fair numbers in the far north of your area around Oregon Buttes and Jack Morrow Hills.  Shouldn't be too hard to find a 12" to 13" buck for your dad and there are a few bigger ones running around.
Although I've never hunted it I would consider hunting the area along hwy 28 between Farson and hwy 372.  There are huge chunks of BLM land both north and south of 28 and again access is not a problem.  Some of the biggest bucks I've seen have been driving this stretch of highway.  My sense is there are less animals but higher trophy potential.  Your highest trophy potential is probably farther south in that checkerboard land if you can work out access.
Having just a few days to bow hunt can be tough.  You can bring a pop up blind and set up by a water source, but know the high likely-hood of WY winds to shred or send your blind to the next county.  I would suggest being aggressive and try to sneak close in on bucks and then pop up a decoy and use calling to try and close the deal.  You can search videos on the web to learn some techniques.  I wouldn't guarantee an antelope harvest using this technique, but I can pretty much guarantee some excitement and fun. My last advice is bring a 4WD with good tires.  You'll be traveling on some roads that turn to grease with a good rain or wet snow.

Very generous! thank you. I've taken one antelope with a decoy and my bow so I will probably give that a whirl!

If it keeps raining we will all have to  spot and stock or decoy's, goats will have water everywhere. Last year I was driving through mud puddles to get to my blind location and I bet you can all guess that the goats didnt come in for two days just drank out of the mud puddles. On day three it rained on me and I just packed up and headed out. Got in some really good reading time and naps though.
