Bear fur for string silencer?
« on: October 10, 2007, 11:50:00 AM »
My taxidermist has some pieces of black bear fur that he would give me, and I was wondering if it would make a good string silencer, or is it too thick and course?
I've never used fur pieces before, always cat whiskers and such.
What are the dimensions of the fur?
From what I can tell, they look like about 1/2" by 2-3" long.

I see no reason why it wouldn't work. I prefer "water" mammals (mink, beaver, otter) for the oils but I don't see why bear wouldn't work.

I cut my strips 1/4" x 3 or 4"

I've used fox, otter, beaver, bobcat, raccoon, and mink, and seen coyote fur used.  One seemed to work as good (or bad) as the other.  Seems to me the tanning process removes the natural oils from any of them, although the finer fur will hold more water.

I love the look of fur (except coyote--looks like two hamsters tied to the string with the long hair), but rubber "cat whiskers" work better than any fur I've tried.
