« on: July 19, 2015, 12:54:00 PM »
Going to Canada for geese and ducks in Oct and last year they got into a lot of snow geese. Already planning to keep all the geese primary feathers but curious if snow geese is the same. I'm thinking good white fletching
Thanks!

I don't know for sure, but it's a gamble I'd take! I'd process a few right wing (in my case) primary feathers and give it a go.

I'm betting it will work out as good as cinnamon and sugar!

Good luck on the hunt.

If I am not mistaken, snow geese have dark blue primaries.  Their secondaries are white

Yes and they are naturally more waterproof. We shoot many geese here in Texas , I save wings for fletching every year.

Goose feathers are a little, stiffer than turkey and more water proof.
The stiffness makes them a little more noisy, probably could go smaller for same stabilization of arrow.

Every snow goose I ever shot had black primaries feathers that could be used for arrow fletching.  You would have to hunt swans to get white primaries.  It is possible to do just that in parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin in the Mississippi valley.  Greater Canadian's primaries make great fletch and there are a lot to be shot around here, but those are are not white either.

Just the feathers, using the whole goose upsets the FOC.

Snow goose feathers aren't much different than Canada they are a little soft you have to cut them low to make them stiff enough and they are black. I have tried snow goose ,Canada goose, sandhill crane, and turkey is by far the best !!

I agree with Tim,if you ever go goose hunting around the eastern shore of Md,there's a number of goose and duck pluckers, they save and sell the feathers but they'll give you all the wings you want..Turkey is way better but if you like black feathers, goose does well, they're just not as durable...

Has anyone tried using primaries, or secondaries, from Sandhill Cranes?  Just curious.
