« on: July 22, 2015, 08:20:00 AM »
Wifes wants to visit relatives in New Cumberland this year,,, I want to hunt after saying hi..

anyone familiar with the Harrisburg/New Cumberland areas I'm hoping there is a state game land of Public management area I could deer hunt on without stepping on any of the locals toes.  doesn't have to be loaded with deer or a personal spot just looking to get out a couple days while I'm there.

thanks for any info, T

I don't personally hunt that area but I believe there is a load of public ground to hunt in the vicinity. I've heard the turkey hunting is good and deer numbers probably aren't too bad either. If you get on the Pa dnr website, they should have plenty of maps showing where state land is located. Good luck.

There are a lot of State Game Lands ("SGLs") near Harrisburg.  The Pennsylvania Game Commission has a great mapping center for SGLs on their website.  Also, check out GoHuntPa.org.  For where you're staying, I recommend checking out SGL 246, which is about 425 acres; SGL 170, which is over 9,000 acres; or SGL 145, which is over 2,000 acres.

hey thanks for posting, I have been poking around the PA website and I found an area SGL #230 (1083 acres)  which is just above Carlisle, PA in zone 4B.

on the map I guess it looks like anythign else but I did see the doe permit quota is alot higher than neighboring zones so honestly if I see only a couple does thats fine for me.

I think I missed the deadline for the doe permits though because I don't even have the license yet and pretty sure they don't come with a doe permit you have to buy whats available.

Actually, you have not missed the deadline for a doe permit.  The application deadline for non-resident antlerless deer licenses is July 27th.  If you're looking for an area with a lot of deer, check out WMU 5C or 5D.  It would be about an 1 to 1.5 hour drive for you to get to some good land to hunt, but I always have success there.

so I got my PA license this morning along with the required seperate archery license,  I wanted to apply for a doe permit in 5C and did print one of the doe permit applications from the website but it says the application can only be mailed in the official Pink Envelope??,,,, so I think I missed the deadline of July 27th because I don't have that envelope here and that was a bummer because why can you print the apps but you need this special envelope.

I'm wondering though there is another date set for 3 of the WMU's including 5C and the date is August 1st which I think was the opening so I'm hoping I can get one then otherwise its buck with bow and does with camera 8^(..

5C isnt that far and after finding out some info I think I'd be okay there being a Non Resident, a got a PM from a couple people on another forum that said I should rent a pickup with PA plates when I get  down there and I will be fine or put a trail camera in a tree to watch over the truck while i'm hunting,,,  its crazy now I tried a new spot once and got a love letter that said I'd get shot with a broadhead if I ever came back.

FWIW, (and it may have changed this year) but you can log onto the website where you got your license and check Anterless permit allocations. Usually, and I say USUALLY, there are plenty of license for 5c... the "deadline" is the FIRST day of legal application.

There is a pre-set # of licenses for each WMU and when they're sold, it's OVER.  Check to see what ones are open and perhaps someone here can grab you a pink envelope to send into one of those areas near where you'll be that still has permits available.

I'm no longer in PA or I'd grab you a pink envelope and send it to you...they're at ANY license retailer in PA!

Like Doc Nock said, the 27th is the first day non residents can apply for a doe permit not the deadline for applying.

wow I thought it was the deadline but sounds good then, 5c has a lot of tags so hopefully I can get one there, hopefully someone has an extra pink envelope,,,,, how does a non resident get the pink envelopes if they don't live there I couldn't find anywhere that said they send em to you I only found the apps which I printed.

if nobody has one do you just go into any sporting store and they are free, maybe the inlaws might get mew one but I know they don't hunt.

Most shops you can go in and ask for a Pink Envelope...

You could surely call a Regional Office, explain your situation and ask them to mail you one or 2.

I'm sure your inlaws could walk in and just ASK for a Pink Doe License Envelope...

Git er done...

PA Walmarts sell license... Hardware stores, etc.
