Red Wing Hunter 60's era
« on: July 30, 2015, 10:19:00 AM »
I'm brand spanking new to the tradgang and to traditional shooting.  I just inherited a 1962-4 era (confirmed by the guys at Bob Lee Archery) recurve 58" 43# Serial number RW-6753 Bubinga wood handle limbs are fiberglass with a maple core.  I have been bow hunting with a crossbow and compound for a few years but would really like to move into trad hunting.  Can I hunt with this bow or is it a collectors item at this point?

I live in Pittsburgh, PA and am not sure who I can find to learn from in the traditional shooting world.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks   :)

I'm not too far north of you guys - about 2.5 hours north of the Burgh, and am there usually one weekend per month. Awesome offer there

Your bow should be fine to shoot barring any twisting in the limbs/cracks in the bow. Get a new string, a few arrows, and you should be set.

Post some pictures up (you have to use photobucket and post the link here) so we can see it!

I have a '59 Red Wing Hunter 46# at 28". It shoots well, and yes, you can hunt with it. Keep in mind that this is going to be less draw weight and speed than you were used to with the compound, but don't fret. This poundage bow with a well placed shot is totally capable of handling the hunt. In short, not only can you hunt with your Red Wing Hunter, you will be hunting in grand style. Go for it! Good luck.

I have RW6492, 53#.  Great bow and definitely a good bow to hunt with.  It's definitely an adequate draw weight.  I hunted last year with a 42# Ben Pearson Model 709 Hunter, which was sorta their answer to the Red Wing Hunter and is very similar performance wise.  Use a good sharp broadhead and take one of these guys up on their offer and let them help get your arrows tuned to the bow right.  I like heavy arrows myself.  Slower but will penetrate better.

Welcome to the addiction,
Matt

The Redwing Hunters are great bows!  I have 2 of them.  Should be no problems for hunting with the right arrow combination.  I have taken antelope and whitetails with mine.

Red Wing Hunters are great bows. I have one myself. Along with about 40 other "vintage" bows. Once baptized, you'll come back for more.
