Switch Cane Arrows inprogress - One down!

This is the way I straighten my cane..that's cooking oil in the little cup. I took the pic after I had 3 straight, then straighted a total of seven, then began cleaning the straight ones up.
 

 

 

Once straighten I cut self nocks, I didn't plug the nock end. I'm going to give it a try, hope I don't have an problems. I then filed down the nodes and put two coats of tru-oil on them, then fleched one..

 

 

 

 

 

This was my first time wrapping the flechings, second time every making an arrow, second time attempting fletching.

What kind of head are you going to use?  
Did you spine them at all first?
Did you do anykind of spin test on them?

Since you wrapped below the nocks you shouldn't have any problem with them splitting even though you didn't plug them. I would suggest smearing epoxy or glue over that thread wrap below the nock though for insurance.

  I was thinking about coating them with something. I was kinda thining tru-oil might harden up but some super glue would probably be better.

  I will plug the point end with about a 4" hardwood, 2" in the cane and 2" out front. This is to mount the glue on broad heads "Ribtek 100 grain on sale for $10.50 per 6 at kustom king archery". I wanted stone points but my knapping skills are lacking, I then started cut out some trade points from a 2 man crosscut saw I picked up for $10. Then this morning I deceided I needed a taper tool for wood arrows (which I have yet to make) and ran across the deal on the glue on's so...that's that I guess.


I did not spine them, I made one last year and shot it and it flew better than the dozen of wood arrows I paid $70.00 for.

I'll shoot them and see what happens, if they don't work for me someone will be able to use them!

I have made a spin tester but have not used it yet.

My finished canes are 29.5" right now, I have a draw of 26".

Before I found the boardheads (on order) I was making use of a 2 man cross cut saw, that appeared to have about 60 trade points in it. I started with a pattern, it was barbed. Even though barbed points are legal here, I decided against it, thinking retrieval from a target would be a pain. I had one cut out and not wanting to waste shaped and mounted it, waiting for epoxy to dry now.

 

Now that I had cut the end off the saw and the fact that I had been wanting to try my hand at a knife. I challeged a guy from work to a knife build off if you will. We pick the pattern and well that's about all the rules we have for now. We have not set a time limit yet but I thinking about 2 weeks should be enough time.

Thanks for looking I'll post a pic of the mounted trade point once it is finished. I mounted it on the first cane arrow I made last year.

Found a great deal on some glue-ons...*KustomKingArchery* *ordered Thursday after noon and had them on Saturday, standard shipping*..Ribtek 100 grain..I cut a wood insert from poplar wood, glued it in, the attemped my first try at glueing on heads. It wasn't to bad. 550 grains on the finished arrow.

 

 

 

One down..I also ordered some hex head blunts, and had some field points. So for now I'm going to make up 3 broadheads, 3 Hexheads, and 3 Field points. Then I should be a little faster at this.

Those Ribteks are easy to get hunting sharp. Few strokes with a file then take them to the tri stone.

Dustin I love that point. It's great. I've been wanting to make some. What do they weight? Did you just get a 2 man saw from a flea market?

I have not weighted it, but will tonight for you. It is not sharp yet either. I picked the saw up at an antique mall, they had them from 10.00 to 65.00. That one was 5 1/2' in length.

The trade point weighed in at about 182 grains before final sharpening..

Another way to plug shafts...

 

Glue the dowel in the cane cut to length, then taper. Glue on point...

Did you cut your cane yourself?
I looked at some this weeknd and its not as thick as the stuff for stakes at Lowes.
I wouldnt call it thin though.

I did cut it myself, I'm lucky to have it growing just behind the house. About 200 yards.

   The cane you want or try to find, is best if it does not taper alot. In short look for an arrow in the cane. I try to find the ones that will be 3/8" to 11/32" on the point end and hope they do not taper to greatly on the nock end.

Everytime I look through it I look for that perfect 11/32 or 5/16th arrow shaft.

I have yet to find it.

Im probably going to take an open end wrench with me and cut the ones it fits on. We have several patches of cane. Most is skinny though.
