Bob Lee Recurve String Length
«

I have checked on bob Lee's website and they recommend an "AMO" string length for their bows. Which, according to their site could be any where from 4-5" shorter than the bow.
I am shooting a 62" bob lee bicentenial and have a 58.5" string and it is too short. My BH wont go down below 8.25 and their site says to be around 7.5-8".
What is your string length if you don't mind measuring it for me.

AMO/ATA string length is 3" shorter than the marked length (measured under 100# of force), longbow or recurve. That falls in line with your bow--a 59" string should put the brace in spec.
I don't have a B.L. bow on hand to measure--sorry.

Thanks Chad.
I was going by what Bob Lee had on their website.
"STRING LENGTH
Your bow's AMO (Archery Manufacturer and Merchant's Organization) length is marked on its lower limb. To achieve the correct brace height you will need to use a bowstring of the same AMO length. (Example: An AMO 62” bow requires an AMO 62” string). The actual length of your bowstring will be 4”-5” shorter than its marked AMO length."
I just made a 59.5" string and twisted it until I got it at the right length. it is around 58.75.
It's weird when a website doesn't even know the right length string for their bows. I always wonder if they are getting these numbers with an unstretched string, but then that wouldn't be amo.

Don't sweat the string info on the site Daniel. Its my belief that it was written back in the day when B50 was still used, and it accounts for the ridiculous stretch that a new B50 string goes through. Modern materials don't budge but an 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch so string only needs to be 3" or so shorter.
My 60" Exotic I have set on the high side of their recommended range at 7 7/8" and it shoots like a dream. I just ordered a new Fury string for my 68" Heavyweight from Allen Shafer and I had him make it 64.5" and it's perfect.

Nineworlds,
I traded my BW for this bow and bow does it shoot great, but it is super loud! I also have mine at 7 7/8".
I am not sure what to do with it.

forget the AMO recommendations. i've had 2 bob lee bows, one marked 60" and another marked 62" and the same string braced both bows the same!!
best to get some strong cordage and get the bow braced where you want it and then measure the string length needed.
tie a loop in one end of the cordage then use a bowyers hitch to allow adjustment at the other end.

Clint,
i was your post on that, but didn't see a definite solution, which is why i posted this one. I don't know if its me or what, but after shooting my thunderchild all week this bob lee sounds like a shot gun going off..
it does help that its hitting exactly where i'm looking though.

It drives me crazy...some of the most talented bowyers (and others too) don't pay attention to strings and/or AMO/ATA specs. It's like having a dragster and not paying any attention to what fuel you put in it.

Daniel,
Of course a Lee curve will be loud compared to a Thunderchild LOL. But to hear you say it's louder than a Widow makes me raise an eyebrow. My 60" just has wool puffs on the string shooting 10gpp and I find it very quiet for a bow that has string contact at the limb tips. Being yours is 62" don't be afraid to try it at above 8". Try 8 1/8" and see what happens. I have found that these bows are very snappy and with the deflexed riser a slightly higher brace doesn't hurt the arrow speed much if at all. I've shot a bunch of different recurves and the Lees always impress me with their sound level for a working tip recurve.

hmm.. i will try that. I may give bob lee a call tomorrow to see what they recommend. this bow is #51@28 and my arrows are around 520 grains so they should be right there at 10 gpp.

I have 2 Bob Lee 62 inch recurves, 1 is 66 and the other is 57@28 inches. Both are set at 8 1/8, and are very quiet. Both are currently wearing beaver strip silencers.
My wife has a 60 inch and a 58 inch BL recurve, and they're both set up with the brace height just over the maximum recommended, and they are quiet, also.

I have several BL bows. The 60" and 62" on 19" riser like 7 3/4. They are dead quiet. I also have a 62" on a17" riser. This one likes an 8 1/4 BH.
Just put an Allen Shafer string on my 62". Very quiet and fast.

I have a 60" Bob Lee Classic and with my brace height set at 7 5/8. The last string I made was a 10 strand 8190 and the length at my B.H. Is 56 3/8". I've also got this bow shooting super quiet with homemade wool yarn silencers.
