Help Enlarging Diameter of Center Serving
« on: August 21, 2015, 10:14:00 AM »
Hey guys.  I need help increasing the diameter of my center serving to improve nock fit as my nocks are currently too loose.

My string is 12 strands of BCY D10 served with BCY 62XS in 0.025 diameter.  I shoot Easton X Nocks and when the serving is brand new they fit ok, maybe just a touch on the loose side but after a little shooting and wear on the serving they are too loose and fall off the string.

I am capable of reserving myself and I have a whole role of the 62XS so I'd like to know if there's something I can put under the serving to enlarge it. I also have a full roll of BCY D97.  Would it be possible to just cut one or two pieces of D97 the length of my serving lay them in place and serve over them?  Any issues with that causing the serving to not be uniform and round? My other option is to buy a roll of  0.030 Halo but I hate to spend $30 if I can make what I have work. Any advise or tips appreciated!

Put some dental floss under before you serve it.

I wrap one or two layers of dental floss over the serving, and in between my upper and lower nocks.

Just reserve with a larger diameter serving thread.  They come in several sizes.

30 dollars sure sounds inexpensive compared to the annoyance of makeshift solutions especially if that costs you a game animal

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Someone said to use a bit of Teflon pipe tape under serving but haven't tried it. ??
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I have used teflon tape and it works well.  You can either do the length of the serving or just a couple inches.  Put 2-3 wraps under it and it will work out great.

Here is alink of how to do it.

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. Jeremiah 17:7

But its end is the way of death."  Proverbs 14:12

another thing you can do is run the tag end under the serving for the full length of the serving(of however far you want.

If a nock is just barely loose, I use this tactic.  After you do your first 10 or so wraps and pull snug, just keep a serving.

pm me if you need any assistance.

You're right and I'm not too worried about $30, but I know there's a method the professional string makers use because I bought another string with 10 strands of BCY D10 instead of 12 with the exact same center serving and the nock fit is much tighter.  So I'm trying to learn how the professional string makers do it.

If it were my string, I'd use 12 strands vs 10.  You can also run the tag end of the serving the full length like Daniel mentioned.

.032 Power Grip should hold, but may be too big.  .030 Halo will likely slip.

You can build up the nock point itself with a couple of wraps of dental floss.

I have used 1" wide masking tape on the string before serving. One layer or as many as needed works very well.

Chad...the string I'm asking about is 12 strands.   I was just saying I have another string that is 10 strands of the same material with the same serving but it has a tighter nock fit so I know the string maker used some method to build it up.   I prefer the 12 strands so I'm trying to get the right nock fit. I have .032 Power Grip and you are correct, it is too big.

Daniel.  Thanks for the info and the video link.  I'll try running the tag end up first and see how it fits.  If that doesn't work I'll try the teflon tape.   Thanks everyone for their suggestions

Tag end up will likely do it, but if not, there's nothing wrong with using two strands under the serving as you proposed initially.

Sorry--I read it wrong.  Running the tag end of the serving the full length should do the trick.

The color(s) can make a difference in diameter.  A white, or black/white string will be a little smaller than fluorescent colors.

I would wrap 1-3 wraps of dental floss around the serving where nock goes on, quick, easy and custom fit and when correct a drop of super glue to keep knots tied. Next couple of strings try the above mentioned remedies for increasing diameter, teflon tape works well for me. You always want more then one broken in string during hunting season.     :campfire:

I tried running the tag end all the way up and serving over it.  That enlarged the diameter too much and the nocks were too tight. I also didn't like the ununiform bulge it put in the serving.  I pulled the serving off and tried the Teflon tape.  One wrap of tape the length of the serving then served over it and nocks fit perfectly and serving is nice and smooth! Thanks to all for the suggestions!

Not sure how thick BCY D10 string material is, but I make a 12 strand 8190. For the serving I wrap two layers of Teflon plumbers tape and then serve with .021 Halo. This has worked out perfect for my FMJ 500's.

When serving over the tag you have to keep it pulled tight and straight.

This can be tricky, but definitly helps make a nice looking serving.  A another trick I have done is start my serving with a strand or 2 of the material under the serving(be sure it is waxed so it will stick) and treat it like a tag end.

But I do believe the teflon tape is the easiest way to do it.  I know guys who only buy 1 size serving and wrap the telfon as needed to get the proper fit.
