Cheap little Sunday project
« on: August 23, 2015, 07:36:00 PM »
With the new season fast approaching I dreaded the idea of putting my longbow in my truck. Every time I close the back doors I'm afraid I'll bang into a tip and break or chip it. I've had this idea on my mind for a while so I decided to just get it going. Some 4" drain pipe , end caps, hose clamps, a hasp, and a bit of paint. Pretty simple. It'll actually hold both my longbows, but needing to transport 2 is unlikely. Only thing I need to do is bring 70" of micro fleece over to the sew shop and have them stich it into a bow sock. Not totally neccessary but I figure that'll only run me $10 so its cheap insurance.

Thanks. Forgot to mention, the hose clamps are bolted to the rear cross piece of the truck bed. It actually came out a lot more solid than I expected. Of course, some PVC and small hasps won't keep out a determined thief, but it'll keep and honest man honest.

Nice job!
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Nice job. And taking 2 bows along is something I nearly always do. Guess it's the ex-Boy Scout in me   :)

Great idea. One question, though. What about heat? I know Bama gets about as hot as GA and was wondering if it is safe to leave a bow in it if not in the shade. Some have told me that heat is not an issue if the bow is left unstrung, but I am not so sure.

About the heat... Yeah, that's always an issue. I went with the tan to attempt to lower the surface heat a little. Usually if its very hot out I'm not hunting much, and if I am the bow will only be in there for transport so it won't be an issue. If I did HAVE to leave it in there while my truck was parked for a while I would just lay some camo netting over it or a blanket. As a general rule though, I dont feel that rare cases of heat are bad for a modern material bow that is unstrung, but no doubt there are plenty of examples that contradict that idea. Some air holes in the bottom would allow for some flow, but its a trade off for water getting in so I opted against it. All subject to debate though.

I have had one of the tips mashed up while the bow was inside the truck...didn't ruin the bow but it was close...

You have a great idea there...

Great idea ...... one suggestion, drill out the screw heads a little to prevent a screw driver from working.    ;)
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm
not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

I feel you Russ. My driveway is a big hill so sometimes the back doors have a mind of their own.  Iohkus, thats a good idea and I will. There's never going to be a reason to remove them so I may as well!
