question about stand height

when i hunted with a compound i usually hunted about 20 ft. up but when i switched to a stick bow everybody i talked to said i should lower my stand to about 15.i was just wandering what everybody else does.thanks in advance.

I like the angles a lower stand gives. Usually 10 to 12 feet does it for me.

Early season when there's a lot of leafy understory I'll even get down around 8'. Use the understory for cover.

I go up as high as I need to get good cover yet also good shooting lanes.  I would have to say most of the time I'm up around 16-20 feet high.  For some reason from this height I seem to shoot more accurately.  Matt

When I hunted tree stands it was about like C.Lamb does. Rare was the occasion I couldn't touch the platform with my bow tip while standing on the ground. A spot I hunted once I hung the stand on the tree from the ground. A milk crate to stand on while hanging it would have helped, but I made do.

Do the folks that go up 30'-35' or more need to haul oxygen up there with them?

I tell you I have killed them way up in the tree, about half way up, and off the ground using a tree seat at the base. I like about 6-8 feet up these days. I am getting wider not taller and the thought of a fall is not appealing. Maybe 6-8 feet I'll just bounce (LOL) Two things are for sure. Mind the wind and the lower you go the less movement you can get away with. Be a statue on the ground

I bought a couple of cheap ladder stands for this season and plan to place them on Public land. I'm only using two sections of the ladder so that should place my butt about 11'.I'm planning to place them on the backside of the tree from the trails I plan to hunt.

Yep, better shot angle. I just took a section out of my tripod and put it back together, now it's only 7' to the platform.  Perfect height for a cattail slough or cornfield...

I'm of the same mind as the others. The lower you can get away with the better. In fact, I rarely will consider shooting at an animal unless it is in the 20 yard range anyway. When a high strung animal. like a whitetail, is very close even an extremely quiet bow will usually result in a startled reaction which can lead to misses and poor hits. At the 20 yard range the sound of the shot usually gets  a look and not a startled deer until the arrow arrives. Wind and movement are the demons of bowhunters so pay attention to the details and make the first shot count.

Depends.  In Texas the two major hunting areas is the hill country and south texas.  If you hunted in south texas you would be limited to a max of around 7 feet in general.  Although there are exceptions. I like being low no matter where I am.

I go up until my knees start shaking and my heart rate starts skyrocketing from thinking about how hard the fall would be if...  So i only go about 10-12 feet up.  Just means I have to be a bit more selective in my setup.  20 fett up might as well be 200 feet up for me!!

I usually only set my stands at 15ft. to the platform. I feel it gives me enough height, and I still have good shot angles.

My first Rule is never set one Higher than Mickey can just barely walk under    Mostly I just use an ole BAR STOOL
