Sheep hunt preperations
« on: September 28, 2015, 10:53:00 PM »
So starting next spring I plan on beginning to apply for sheep tags in various western states . I have developed a work out plan and am officially going "Paleo" diet wise. I feel I need to loose 43# prior to trecking  the mountains
I plan on running 5 miles every other day

I plan on shooting my bow at yardages out to 40

Are there any states more favorable to drawing tags
Ben Pearson Cougar 40#
PSE Black Hawk T/D 55#
Bamboo backed Osage Self bow 57#
Ivory Hunter 60#

You will need 3 preference points before you have any possibility of drawing in Colorado.  Shooting at sheep usually involves extreme angles.  good luck.  Jim

You are on the right track with your diet and exercise. And no, there are no non resident sheep tags to be drawn that are easier than others. Tripling your odds is going from .1% to .3%. If you want to hunt sheep every year you can just do that in Montana's unlimited units but killing a ram in them is nearly impossible with a rifle.

The odds are not good in any state, however if you are wanting to hunt bighorns always apply for Idaho. Best odds in the west. In 2006, I drew the second year of applying. Been applying to 6 other states since and haven't drawn. May never again!

While it's not a bad thing at all, you may simply end up in good shape for the rest of your life waiting on the sheep tag you may very well never draw. There are still I believe, over the counter tags for some areas in Montana's Absaroka/Beartooth Wilderness. You can contact the Division of Fish, Wildlife and Parks to confirm availability. I hunted the area quite a bit while living in Billings in 1973&74. It is very rough and very remote country with fewer sheep and much less chance for a big ram than Montana's famous draw units. Did I mention it is very rough and remote country?

As Jim Wright said, it's a good thing to get in shape, even if you never draw a tag. I put in for years in Wyoming before giving up; tags are super tough to draw. Have you thought about Alaska or Canada? Spendy, but much easier to get a tag.

Go for a ewe tag if that'll do you. They were easier to draw a while back. A ewe shoulder mount is nothing to slouch at.

Ya if looking at Colorado you have plenty of time to get into shape,IF YOU DONT HAVE PREFRENCE POINTS.  Havnt looked at the odds in a while but depending on how many people  you may have decent odds as a nonresident.  Assuming don't have points. You'll be spending the next few years accruing those before you can even consider applying. If you are young. You have time on your side.  Good luck
