Is this the right stuff?
« on: October 10, 2015, 07:29:00 PM »
I went scouting/hunting in a new area this morning and stumbled onto a patch of cain. It looks better and is much sturdier than the stuff I tried previously. It's about 3/8 " in diameter. So I cut a few shafts and put them up to dry. I figured id ask you primitive guys,  Is this the right stuff?

Looks like switch cane and it should make great arrows. Be sure they are mature. If they had paper sheaths at the nodes they are probably too young. You will be able to tell because immature cane will wrinkle lengthwise as it dries. Bundle them together and let them rest for a few weeks.

Thx Pat! I think there was only one with paper like sheaths. The rest had little sprouts at the nodes. I'm pretty excited that I may actually have the right stuff this time. I've got a bunch of wild turkey feathers, and a bunch of elk and deer sinew. Now all I need is to learn to knapp! Still struggle with the knapping.
