Finally found out how to sharpen a simmons head
« on: October 16, 2015, 10:32:00 AM »
A month or so back, I bought a KME to attempt to conquer these simmons heads.  The system is unbelievably consistent, but some how I just couldn't get the simmons heads sharp.  I did use it on a few knives and some non concave heads and I don't believe anything could work better.  Well, I know it couldn't work better, it could only math perfection.  But I still could not get the simmons head "hair popping sharp".  I could get them sharp, but not razor sharp.  A friend used a razors edge and told me to try it out.  I purchased one and it is the answer for someone who struggles like myself.

I slid the broadhead down my arm last night after trying it out and shaves hair full length of the blade.  There is a flaw in the Razors edge, though.  The more you sharpen your heads with it, the greater the angle gets on the guide.  I am sure this isn't that big of a deal, but it is something that I think will need replacing in the future.  I did it just as Chris Spikes showed and it worked flawlessly.

I've got a 3-sided Jewelstik that I modified to accept a guide rod so that it could be used with clamp style systems like Lansky/KME. I'm sure Chris' method works fine, but it appears your grinding down the guide in the process. Diamond hones aren't cheap and I try to avoid any unnecessary wear.

Hands down the best system I ever tried but yes you will wear the razors edge guide out after a while doing lots of sharpening

with the KMWE, I just couldn't get the angle the same full length of the head.  I did get a good angle at the top and then the back of the blade got little to no work.  with the Razor's edge, it is actually the exact opposite, which I think may be better.

The tip of the blade had a little steeper angle than the trailing edge, but both of them are shaving sharp.  This is the sharpest I have gotten these heads, ever.  I do not think it has anything to do with the KME, but everything to do with me not operating it properly.

I have really good results with the Simmons Steelmaster on any simmons head or other two or four blade heads.

Chris' system is what I use as well. .... I REALLY like how sharp it gets them!

Good luck, shoot straight and God bless,
