new set up, what arrow point weight? 50# bow
« on: October 27, 2015, 01:00:00 AM »
Hey guys i'm changing my whole set up, new poundage of bow, new arrows and so I thought I might was well decide on a point weight while I am at it. I want to choose a constant point weight for my broad heads, field points, and small game heads. I'm not sure if bow poundage plays a factor or if its all about learning how your arrow shoots. I am leaning toward 145 grain points but I am hoping to get some input from you experienced guys.

If it matters I will be shooting gold tip blem arrows, a 50 pound recurve @28 with a 26 1/2 inch length of pull. I have no Idea what the actual poundage at this LoP since I don't have access to a bow scale.

200gr.
should give you a good hunting weight. 125gr BH + 75gr adapter gives you tons of choice in BH's and points.

145's have worked well for me, with the same specs as you have. 50/55 douglas fir or 3555 gt's. Hardnhitting combo!

At your draw, you are likely in the 45# range with your bow, so a 500 (3555 GT) shaft with 200 to 225 up front cut should work. 145 grains will be too light, I think. You might get by with it if you leave them full length, but that leave a lot of arrow sticking out in front of the bow. In my 48# longbow, drawing maybe 27 1/2" I'm shooting 175 grain points with 50 grain brass inserts behind them (Zwickey Deltas or Simmons Tigersharks with long aluminum adapters) on GT Ted Nugent 3555 blems cut to 29" BOP with 3 5" feathers...506 grains total arrow weight. I get bullet holes paper tuning with 175 gr. field points and excellent flight with both field points and broadheads. I would guess you'd need something similar. If you cut the shafts any shorter, you will need more point weight.

the bow I just got my last doe with is a baraga 53@28 I shoot it about 27 maybe 26 1/2 with the extra wool on.  I used heritage 90's cut to 29" with 250gr.

your arrows I'd guess at least 200gr up front..   but before you fletch just shoot a bunch of points and see what the shaft does

My setup is a palmer recurve 47lbs at my 26" draw. I shoot Heritage 150's with 200gr broad heads or a 150 with 50gr brass insert and palmer extreme cut broad heads at 160gr. They weigh in around 530grs. The gold tip 35/55 with 50gr insert and 150gr broad heads fly well too but weigh in at 470gr.
