String clearance
« on: November 02, 2015, 10:28:00 AM »
Ok guys, ran into an issue this past weekend and I need some insight.

New to trad and while taking a few whacks at squirrels from the tree, I noticed that my string is coming into contact with my left leg when I'm drawing. This doesn't allow me to reach full draw, and I'm missing left (collapsed form, I assume).

It helped if I drew the bow as if I was standing on level ground, then bending to get onto target, but I had issues focusing on my mark and picking a spot, since I wasn't focused throughout the shot cycle.

Any ideas on what to do?

15 feet to my platform, shooting 8-10 yards.

cant the bow some.  if that doesn't work, shoot it straight up.  I usually like to can't mine to anywhere from 1:30-2:30, but have canted it as much as 3 oclock.  It all has it's scenarios.  It is also good practice to try out all of these ahead of time, because you never know when you may need to cant your bow a crazy amount to make that perfect shot.

A lot of times all that is needed is a slight wrist rotation on the bows grip. Wrapping your fingers clear around the bows grip often times puts too much pressure in the palm of your hand on the grip and causes the bow to torque when you drop the string..... If you rotate your wrist to between 30-45 degrees, this puts all the pressure on your thumb pad, and allows you to rotate your bow arm elbow away from the string.

check this out..... BTW... if you wish to can't the bow, that's fine.... just bend at the waist a bit.

I cant the bow around 130, and I practice out of the stand weekly. The only thing I can think of is extra layers or my stance in the stand. I shoot fine in plain clothes and have become good enough to notice when my form is collapsing (usually miss 8 inches left and 3 or 4 high).

I'll have to keep shooting to figure it out I guess. Frustrating to say the least!

Kirk, my issue isn't with contact of my forearm (I've worked long and hard on that), it's when I'm drawing, the lower half of my string contacts my upper thigh and doesn't allow me to come to full draw. Stance issue?

You left hand or right hand shooter?

If right hand you are probably shooting with a closed stance. Open the stance up some.

Kirk, great illustration.... I tried this and immediately eliminated my right and left misses...I have never seen the torquing issue explained this way.....works for me...!!!
Thanks..!!

There is a good chance that if you try to work things out on your own they will only get worse...find someone who knows something about good archery form, and they are often closer than you think, to watch what you are doing

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Thanks for the insight guys! I'll have to try to open my stance up a little bit when I'm in the tree. Just to clarify, since I'm a righty, I'll bring my right leg out, similar to a boxers stance?

8-10 yards out is pretty close, need to lean forward and bend at waist so string clears your leg.
shoot straight shoot often
