Nexus! 2 for 2!

Nexus, my Teckle starting to do his job.

He is just on a year now- done lots of training over the summer. He is incredible, albeit a little faster than i would like on the trail.
However,he will slow down and get more methodical as i work with him more.
I have been back over old trails that i had laid a week prior- and he would still track them. the most incredible thing about these dogs, is their ability to lock onto one specific trail/scent and stick to it...irrespective!
I have laid trail over fresh deer tracks and racoon tracks, and he will not even falter as he crosses them.

We are allowed to take our dogs with us in B.C. So i have been taking him with this season, Always on a short lead, and under control- and it has worked great. In fact that was my motivation for the Teckle breed, in that it was a small dog, easy to get through our thick underbrush, and easy to have along.
 


This was his first real track, a very short (30 yards!)and easy trail. he was so proud of himself. and didnt want to let my mate Blayne near the deer.
   


This was his second deer- a way harder trail (maybe 300 yards)-the first half was down an old logging road, with a little blood at the shot site- then none- then into the logging slash and finally into the forest. The trail was convoluted- with improving blood sign in the forest on the moss, great reassurance for me- but he showed no interest in the blood!
until finally there was "his" buck!
   

We might not have found the buck were it not for him, or at least spent a heck of a lot of time looking for it!

Still 3 months left in our season- hope to put him right back to work!

Never heard of the Teckle breed. Something like a dachshund? Can't use them in NJ.

Cool to hear about a tracking dog in action. Here in the land of too-many-laws (NY) you cannot take a dog afield for deer, or even track with one after the shot ... Politicians ....

For now I will just keep living vicariously through these stories.

yup, that is  the original name for the dachshunds- usually used more for the working lines as apposed to the showing/pet lines.

i had a few occasions where he would tell me that deer were coming- long before i saw them. or would let me know that deer were close by- so we would then set up to call. when the deer would come to the call he would just freeze- but as soon as the deer bolted , he just could not contain him self any longer- and would let out a yelp.
 he has been a huge asset to my hunting, as we hunt in extremely thick brush, everything is wet, and thick carpets of moss and sodden leaves- makes tracking near impossible.

yea Ben, he has allowed me to take shots on deer that i would normally let walk- due to the surrounding bush.
he is quite a big dog actually- probably weighing 20 lbs- has a looong jaw- just fulla shark teeth- and a humongous  schnozz. actually quite a big dog, just on low profile tires!   :D  

he actually gave my mate a warning nip when he tried to take the hide and discard it - gave us all a surprise.understand why he reacted like that- it was his deer as far as he was concerned. i simply tie him up away from the deer when we are processing them now!!
kinda hard on hunting partners-makes them hard to find, and keep!!
these dogs are kinda Jekyll and hyde. cute and  cuddly family dogs- great with the kids- so tolerant and gentle and playful- but put him on a trail its all business.
when he was about 7 months old he actually pulled a young adult deer down by the ear- and was trying to "drag " it home.this happened right in front of me, so i got there right quick and got it all sorted out- quite a complicated story- but he was all in the clear- he was not out running deer- he is always either in the house, in an outdoor pen, or is on a lead with me.
these are working dogs and really need to be handled quite differently. they can live in the house- and be family dogs, but their prey drive is incredible. they are hunting , killing machines. we used jack russles in africa to track wounded animals- and they were good- but they did not have a patch on these dogs, the J.R.'s were snappy and snarly with kids- were not as good on the trails- and were easily distracted- by comparison that is.
 they still got a tough job done though!

yuppers Bisch- the teckle is the original name for them,nowadays usually reserved for the working bloodlines- and dachshund more for the show/ pet lines.

thanks guys- it's great times with a good dog,
i have had working dogs all my adult life- mostly stock dogs, and some hunters thrown in there at times- most dogs i ever had at one time was 13 dogs!
 Say Ben, you could always just be taking your dog for  a walk, couldn'ya?- i mean after you get back from hunting?
