arrow FOC question
« on: December 06, 2015, 09:53:00 PM »
My aluminum total arrow weight is 620 grains but my FOC only calculates to 11 percent. Will I be ok shooting from a 50lb draw at 28" bow ?
Is higher FOC numbers mostly needed for carbon arrorw set ups due to carbon being generally lighter in grains per inch than aluminum?
Thanks for any advice

If your arrow is tuned to your bow well, it will be just fine. Some folks (like me) believe higher FOC is a good thing. That does not mean that lower FOC is a bad thing. Well tuned is the most important thing of all! Your arrow will be just fine if it is tuned!

Ditto what Bisch said.  Higher FOC is a desired trait but by no means necessary to an efficient arrow.  Most target archers shoot arrows with an FOC in the 7-11% range.  Meaning it's not necessary for good, accurate flight.

There is no difference in measurable penetration increase between 11% and 19%.

Don't personally observe appreciable penetration gains until approaching the 25% EFOC range.

The momentum generated due to your current arrow mass and draw weight should be well above most all North American game pursuits.

Bisch is right. If your bow is well tuned, your arrow will work just fine. I have been fooling around with archery since I was 10 years old (a long, long time) and have never been concerned with FOC. The important thing is whether or not the arrow flies well, and this applies whether the FOC is high or low. Don't go mountain climbing over a molehill. Your arrow is plenty good to go.

many read or "skimmed" doc's research a nd have mis interpreted or mis quoted for a long time.

EFOC is just ONE Of many variables one is able to control to IMPROVE (not perfect) penetration.

Tuning a bow and arrow, or arrow to a bow (both are equally do-able) is critical. EFOC is for those of US who believe it helps with those odd situations we have encountered that limited penetration or --worse--- and wish to avoid.

Personally, age related ailments made me lower draw weight so I looked for way to increase penetration. EFOC is one of them, but not something that fits all situations!

Tune, have confidence and "pick a spot".
