2 1/2 year old scraping everywhere- any thoughts?(pic added)
« on: October 17, 2007, 10:39:00 AM »
I've got an 80-90 inch 8 point working my area.  I had been seeing him on the way to work eating apples in Sept. Now I've got a trail cam pic of him standing in one of his 30 scrapes.  These scrapes are all in about a 2-3 acre area near my oak ridge.  He has visited a couple in the daylight- my cam showed 6:32 the other night (I was at football practice).  Trying to move around a bit and catch him freshening things up.  I know its his first year and hes not sure what hes up to- but it must feel good cause hes going crazy with it.  Most of the scrapes are along the same travel path.  I've got a few stands setting along the path.  Anyone got any suggestions to getting him fired up a bit?  I haven't put anything on any of the scrapes- and been spending a decent amount of time hunting different stands.  Just thinking I should spruce a few up and try to get him going with hopes that he decides to recheck more frequently.
Any thoughts or tips that others have used??
He is dominant boy around here right now.

Piss in one scrape about 4:30 PM about 15 yards from your stand.

2 hours will still be strong enough to bring him in, weak enough to not be able to tell it's not a deer.
Unless you're the lead dog, the scenery never changes....

If you get a chance to hunt immediately after it rains there's a good chance he'll feel the need to freshen his scrapes up.  If you've got a good forecast, I'd try to be on stand as the rain is clearing out, ready and waiting.

Obviously timing is everything and it's hard to put it all together, but it's worth a try if your schedule accommodates it and the weather cooperates.  A window to watch for anyway.

I was out there last night in the rain- it did let up for a while.  Just went out to hang my cam near one of them, and lo & behold, he cleaned it up this morning.....
I snuck through and found 4 others he cleaned up, he left a few alone.  I'll leave the cam out for a few days as we are getting more rain tomorrow.  I'll be out there tonight, and then again Friday night if the weather is decent.
I've been seeing some does and haven't been busted- or altered their patterns so things are good so far.

Most bucks start out making alot of scrapes because they feel the edge coming on. They will start to narrow it down to a few after a while. These scrapes are usually one that are there all the time. I piss in any nice scrape I see, and occasionaly throw some wall hanger into it. Good luck. Hunting scrapes can get you busted, and require some dedication.

I find the scrapes that produce the best are ones I see year after year.  These are usually along travel routes or staging areas.  Field edge scrapes, in my area, are usually night time activity only (or 99%).  Bucks will make "mock scrapes" which are one time use scrapes and are a waste to hunt over.  If he is re-visiting a scrape it may be a good idea to hunt it.  Keep in mind they may abandon a scrape line if it's enroute to/from a food source if that food source is no longer in use.  Remember to not set up directly over top of the scrape, make your stand 10-15 yards downwind.  If he's freshening them up on his own I wouldn't touch them and just hunt them "natural".  If he's already coming to them why run the risk of discovery?  Be patient and count on the odds he will come by eventually.  Don't overhunt it either.

Richie- I am going to hunt a big buck- in Missouri in a couple of weeks.  I do have a potential big buck spot close to home- but it is a state land spot that takes about 45 minutes from home to a 3/4 mile hike to my stand area.  This spot is 2 miles from home and I not too picky on this piece.  Trail cam pics have shown 9 different dink bucks and I know all of the surrounding neighbors- and what is going to happen on Nov 15th... last year within a one mile radius of my place- 13 bucks were shot opening day of rifle season.  2 decent 8's and the rest dinks.
Talon- his route is a bedding to feeding route- the food, a couple hundred acres of corn the next 40 acre piece over.  This has been the travel route for years now.  I'll catch him out and about one of these sits.

DRR324,

You coming to MO with Ron Bushong by chance?  Or do we just need to prepare ourselves to be over run with multiple groups of Michiganders?   :D

Just curious, Tim

If you do put some buck urine in the active scrapes.. which has worked for me in the past use it sparingly ...See teenage years post.

DON'T PUT BUCK URINE IN SCRAPES ONLY USE DOE IN HEAT IF YOU WANT TO FIRE HIM UP.  Think about it would you rather look for a fight as a teenager or a girlfriend.  And most buck urine is from fully mature deer and that little guy is not mature he just might vacate the area if he thinks there's a big boy around.

Guys,
I've been at this game for awhile as well, my first thoughts have been to sweeten them up with doe in heat- for the same reason KB mentions.  I'd rather smell a girlfriend than a foe....
Didn't make it out last night- had a b-ball coaches meeting.  Raining today, may have to be fashionably late for work tomorrow if the rain quits tonight...start b-ball practice next week- 5 days a week until 12/21  :(  won't leave much time for me....
I am heading out to Grant City area to hunt with Donnie Mclellan at bucks and beards.  Was out there last year, had a great time.  the weather was too warm- but one in our group got a 150" 11 point the first night.  Really looking forward to the week, leaving Nov 2nd, returning the 10th.
May try to take the laptop and air card- if so, I'll try to make it a hunt along trip and keep everyone posted.  check out bucksandbeards.net

Well he's been back working the scrape my stand hangs near.  Got my best pic of him to date.  Pulled my cam card and here he is.  I can only hunt tomorrow, then done for the next 2 weeks.  Have b-ball practice every night then leave for Missouri next saturday for a week.  Hoping he sticks around and maybe shows up on Nov 15th for my daughters first gun hunt.
