First try at woodies
« on: December 31, 2015, 10:15:00 PM »
I've been fletching my own arrows for years and tried cresting some carbons last year, and a second time this year.  I just refinished a bow for my kids to shoot and put a blue/silver/black string on it because my oldest son's favorite color is blue.  I figured I'd build him some arrows to match it and my daughter could just shoot his bow and arrows for now.  Once he steps up to a bigger bow, I'll put a pink string on it and make her some pink arrows.  I asked on here last week about simple and inexpensive ways to build some youth arrows and got several good responses.  But one guy went way above and beyond.  He told me he'd send me a dozen 25-30# birch shafts he had left from one of his projects.  He even paid the shipping.  One of the many reasons I love TG.  Anyway, the package arrived and had not 12, but 18 shafts; 12 from 26-29# and 6 from 19-25#.  I'll do 12 for my son and go ahead and do the six extras for my daughter, even if she doesn't have her own bow yet.  I got them cut and sorted today and worked a few kinks out of a couple to get them all mostly straight.  My hardware, including a taper tool won't get here until Saturday, so I won't get to actually start until then, but I tried out a few colors of Feibing's leather dye on the cutoffs this evening.  The results are pictured below, and it's interesting how different a couple of them look on wood compared to leather.  Top to bottom:  natural, light tan, British tan, medium brown, mahogany, and black.  Of course my son wiuld pick the light tan, so I guess his arrows are gonna be yellow with blue cresting.  I'll try to get more pictures up as I go.

food colorings make great arrow stain.
You can get some loud or flo colors
Works well with water base poly.

Also magic markers and sharpies as well as paint pens work well for cresting.
Not as good as paint and brushes (but the critters dont mind)

Looks like your off to a good start.
If your dipping your arrows be sure to give them 24 hours between staining and clear dipping. I also give them a quick wipe with a dry paper towel. That will cut down on the stain contaminating your clear coat dip tube.

All the hardware came in today.  Just one little issue I had forgotten about.  I ordered everything before I got the shafts....and I only bought one package of nocks, so I can only do 12 for now.  I'm gonna go ahead and do the six for my daughter since I already told her I would.  I'll do the other half of my son's once I get some more nocks.  Anyway, we got the shafts stained and tapered today and I'll get a couple coats of clear on them tomorrow and start cresting sometime next week.  The kids got a kick out of tapering the shafts.  It's amazing how entertained they can be by simple things sometimes.  I've got 100 grain field points for target shooting and some 100 grain blunts for stumps.  Not sure if this 25# bow will be enough for rabbits with a blunt, but once he steps up to my 35# bow later on, they may see some use for those as well.

Well, as usually happens, life got busy and my plans of finishing this project up in one weeks time didn't work out.  I did get a couple coats of poly on the shafts earlier in the week.  I worked on them yesterday and today and was able to get a dozen crested.  Still have to put a couple coats of clear poly on top, glue the points/nocks on, and fletch.  Maybe I can finish them up by next weekend.  Here's how they stand now.  They don't look as good up close as they do in the picture, but they'll do.  I don't have a cresting tool, just a wooden jig that I made and I turn them with my left hand while cresting with my right.  Makes it tough to get those small stripes all straight and even.  I also noticed from the picture while trying to get all this posted that I skipped a silver strip on the second blue/white one from the right.    :knothead:

Battery operated drill works great for cresting.
