Feathers not sticking to arrow.
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:46:00 PM »
I am having a difficult time getting feather to stick to shafts using rust-oleum enamel for cresting. I have used both fletching tape and fletch-tite platinum. Any suggestion to get them to stick. Fletch tape is a little better but they still come off.

Saunders NPV has never failed me on Wood, Carbon and Aluminum.  Never tried it on rust-oleum cresting but it's probably similar to aluminum. I bet NPV would work good.

I'm one of the folks on here that's had no luck with fletch tape.  I am extremely diligent with arrow prep too...it just didn't work well for me at all.

My choice now is Gorilla super glue or Gorilla super glue gel - I've found them to work fantastic.  Quick set up, clean application, and great durability so far.

A couple of things you could try, without knowing if any of them will work.

You could try Duco.

You could try a wipe of Minwax wipe on poly over the Rustoleum.  Better try it on one shaft first, in case there is a bad reaction between the Minwax and the Rustoleum.  I use the Minwax as a clear finish, and I know at least Duco will stick to it, and possibly other glues.

X2 on the Gorilla glue.  Works great even on the wraps.
Good luck.

Is the feather coming off the crest paint or is the crest paint coming off the arrow?

I use the cheap Walmart spray paint for spraying the caps and Testors enamel for my cresting.

Then I dip them in Minwax polycrylic (water base) - about six coats.

Then I use Bohning fletch tape for my feathers. I have not had any feathers come off the arrow. The tape sticks good to the polycrylic coating.

I agree. I even waxed some shafts and used Saunders. It blows Fletch tite right off the road.

I use Rustolem 2X for plastic to spray cap. I crest with Pacta RC car paints. Then use a foam brush to apply a couple coats of MinWax waterbased Polycrylic. Then I use Saunders NPV glue to fletch. Only use Fletch tite when fletching on wraps until I run out anyway.

Gorilla glue blue cap superglue. Best you will ever use. You can fletch an entire arrow in 6 min

Minwax Wipe On Poly will do a fine job of sealing your Rustoleum cap. I use either fletch tape or Saunders NPV. You won't have a problem after sealing them, guaranteed.

My problem is the glue sticks fine to the rustoleum....but the rustoleum eventually let's loose of the arrowshaft if you shoot ALOT..! I frequently have feathers with paint on the quill that have flown off....

I've been using the cheaper wraps and fletchtite with good luck. Not as cheap as spray paint but the feathers stay on.

The glue and tape comes off the paint. Paint is sticking fine to the shaft.
What I did was scotch-brite the shaft then wiped with acetone, then I used a spin rite Crestor to apply the red paint. After it was covered with several coats and covered I toped it with a satin clear. That is what the tape and glue is not sticking to.
