Cresting paint issues
« on: January 17, 2016, 12:04:00 PM »
Just start a new dozen cedar arrows. I'm having trouble with cresting paint covering.
Here's what I've done.
Stained half of the shaft.
Dipped shaft in Bohning lacquer -used gasket.
Crested two coats with Bohning white paint.
Now I'm cresting, also with Bohning paint.
The issue is that after 3 coats the paint is not covering. Still pink over the white and the paint is not showing up well over the stain on the shaft.

I'm thinking of switching to Testers. Will it play nice with the Bohning?
I also plan to switch to Minwax polycrylic.
Should I put a coat on and then finish cresting with Testers?

Thanks for any input.  Steve

not sure about the Bohning white paint, but Testers and the Minwax polyclyic works for me. I use a latex enamel paint for mine.

I think you can go over the lacquer with the minwax & testors products..you just cant put lacquer over them.

Westbrook is right. Did you thin the cresting paints? What color are you trying to put over the white? Pink? I always paint white over bare wood, never had luck with white over any color be it stain or paint.

The white is on bare wood. Trying to crest red. Looks pink after 3 coats. Did not thin paint.
If I can paint Testers over Bohning, then use Polycyclic on top, that's the direction I'll go.
Thanks

You can go over lacquer with Testor's without doing that many coats.  After all cresting paint has cured I dip the crown/crest in polycrilic gloss to seal the crest.

Nowadays I use Testor's flat paints as they seem to thin easier and cover better than many of the glosses.  I generally lay a base of flat white where any light color cresting paint will be used.  Darker colors like black, green, red, blue don't require that.  Once you dip in Polycrilic gloss, the cresting becomes glossy anyway.
