String Tracker line weight preference
« on: February 03, 2016, 08:04:00 PM »
With turkey season on us on less than 2 months thoughts have drifted to the string tracker. I see that the 30# line is available again, just received 5 spools.

Questions for tradgangers who remember and used the 30# line, which do your prefer and recommend 17 or 30#? Extra tips welcome. Thanks.

Keeping an eye on this thread, thought about trying one this spring.

I've never used one, but if my memory serves me correctly I seem to remember seeing the majority of people saying they prefer the 30# string to the 17# string if given a choice. I'm sure more will chime in with experience.

I have only used the 17# line. If the 30# will play out without messing with your arrow, I cannot see how it would not be better. It would take that much more to break it, thus staying intact longer on most every shot.

I have to ask...do string trackers not affect arrow flight? I remember hearing about them back in the 90's, but have never used one. I could see how it might be useful turkey hunting.

Not trying to highjack the thread. Just curious.

I have shot one out to 30 yards, I did not notice a difference.  that makes me want to try a really far shot at 40 yards or so and see how much, or if, it hinders flight some.

I just bought 6 spools for hog hunting . We used to use it for bear hunting back in the 70s then it was a electricians spool in a pill bottle taped to the bow . The spools I just got from the turkey hunting place look the same as the old one we used and they worked good. I haven't tried the new ones yet.

You can buy it at Turkey Hunting Secrets l sell the 17lbs string on my website I just got a new patch in. I will start to carry the 30# when I can afford a second QTY order.

Chad makes a very attractive and functional string tracker by the way, strap-on or screw-in

Once I shake this crud I caught and it quits raining I will be experimenting with the 30# line.

30# has not been available for quite a long time.  Probably need some oldtimers to chime in.  I plan on buying some to try out not that is available.

It's only been a few years that the #30 string hasn't been available, it's really about all I’ve ever used since I started shooting turks in 2000 with my stick.

I much prefer the #30 over #17, but both will work.

The #30 is a more "bonded", less "flossy" feel. Hence seems to be more abrasion resistant...a good thing!

The #30 spools hold less footage obviously because it's a larger dia. line in the same size spool. So, in that category, the #17 wins but I doubt it would stay in tact for the whole spool unless very open country.

I've shot #30 out to 20yds. with no real diff. in where the arrow hits(I've always shot anywhere from 55-60#'s with good weight arrows)....but past that it will quickly the further you shoot.

All of the 30+ turkeys I've killed since 2000 have all been within 20yds., with most being under 10yds...small kill zone, means close up and personal shots!
