New shooter!
« on: February 03, 2016, 10:38:00 PM »
Alright I was told this is the place to go for info I've shot compounds for 10 years now and just got my first long bow it's 60" 43# @ 28" I was gonna try and use a 300 gr point for hunting what spine arrow should I use I was thinking 500 but that might be to weak my draw length is 29" by the way so probably closer to 45# peak I was gonna be using gold tip trad arrows and wanted to use a heavy head to get total arrow weight up as this will be for hunting only.

I would load a GT 35/55 full length with at least 250gr. up front and have at it. Have fun and welcome.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Welcome.

Its probably best to just tune your arrows at this point and not have a  predetermined point weight.  It will safe time, money and frustration.

I think with 300 Gr.  you could be on the cusp of two different  spine sizes depending on how close to center your bow shelf is cut.

Good luck and dont forget to Have fun....

I'm shooting a set-up very similar to yours. 45#@28" drawn to 29 1/2". I'm shooting 4 fletch GT trads 3555 cut to 31 1/2" bop with a 100 grain brass insert and 175gr tips for a total weight around 575gr. and they fly great for me.

I agree with Bisch. You are probably between 3555s and 5575s. I made up an extreme FOC arrow for my 46# RER and it worked out to a 5575 with 320gr total up front and 31" long. I shoot 3555s at 30" with 225 total (including insert)up front that also fly well.

Unless you already have a lifetime supply of 300 gr points, I would second Bisch's recommendation to see where the arrow tunes before deciding on an exact point weight. A 45# draw with a razor sharp broadhead of 200gr or more will penetrate VERY well.

Ok so probably start with 35/55 and just try different point weights any way to tell which would be the best just watch arrow flight? Or paper tune?

Out of my longbow I shoot 67# at 28" I draw 29". I shoot GT velocitys300s  cut to 30.5. Standard insert and. 300gr fieldpoint./broadhead. I have 5" wraps with 3 4" feathers weiging in at 642gr.
They bare shaft slightly weak. Fletched with a big MA1 broadhead on they will alive the fletchings off my fieldpoint shafts. Best to get a few arrow spines and try before you buy dozens.

A lot of the guys here with tons of experience can get arrow set ups going using only their heads but as I'm relatively new to trad gear as well I've had good luck with the spine calculator.   Not always dead on but will get you close..

Good advice, I doubt they will be too weak.

Welcome!

One of the fun parts of shooting traditional is learning the nuances of tuning your arrows to your bow.

Enjoy!
