Last Friday I was running late getting to the stand. I dropped down off the hill through the woods behind my In-Laws house and started a jog through the woods on a four wheeler trail which leads out to the set aside field that buts up against the woods. My stand was well over 5-600 yards away and I didnt expect to see anything that close to the house anyways. I startled four does that took off across the field and stopped about 75 yards away in the corner lookin back at me. I dropped down on a knee and put my bow in front of my face to try and hide me as best as possible. I grunted at the big doe just to see what she would do and noticed a deer coming up the edge of the woods towards me. I tried to get comfy but my foot was falling asleep pretty fast. This little six pointer turns the corner and walks to within three yards of me on the trail. I thought it would be funny to grunt at him again with my voice expecting him to bob his head around then turn around and jog away.
* Hindsight is 20/20. (Not a good idea)
He got mad... Really mad. He started stomping on the ground, raking dirt around like a bull would do, and blew a hocker at me through his nose. At that point I about let a mudshark loose in my undies. I realized I was in a bad spot and stood up and yelled at him to go away. I think it took him a minute to register the fact that I wasnt a deer picking a fight.
thats the best encounter I have ever had on the ground.
