2016 or 2117?
« on: March 20, 2016, 04:12:00 PM »
Sometime I really hate that I over read into stuff.

64" longbow 53# @ 28", I draw just over 28".

2117 arrows are 29 1/2" long with 5" feathers and 150gr points (550 grains).

2016 arrows are 30" long with 5" feathers and 150gr points (508 grains)

They both bullet hole through paper.  Both have same point of impact at 20 yards.

Now for the question of how I read too much.  Which arrow would you shoot?  I have read that the 2117 is too stiff for the bow.  According to the Easton chart I should be shooting the 2016.  But the 2016 just feel so flimsy compared to the 2117.

Why does the internet mess with my brain so much?

Something doesn't look right.  Those two combos shouldn't both be shooting bullet holes, they are spined differently.  Now if the 2117 was longer then the 2016 maybe.

I guess I need to understand what you mean by "feel so flimsy"

Biathlonman, I will have to do some more paper shooting next weekend.  It is very confusing to me also.

Damascus, to me I do not want to stump shoot with them.  They feel like they are just gonna bend if I hit dirt with them.  And they are both xx75 shafts.

I doubt you are any more likely to bend a 2016 than you are a 2117...there is only one thousandth of an inch difference in wall thickness...and I agree that arrows that far apart in static spine should shoot quite differently...further testing sounds like a good idea including shooting them into dirt...another option you might consider is the 2018

X2the 2018. By the way, get some arrow straighting devices while your at it. Dirt is just cover for rocks.

Well I am gonna put the 2016's in the box for my kids to shoot later in life.

I am gonna order some 2018's tonight and play around with the 2018 vs 2117.

M60, I will sure to add a straightener to the order.  Thank you.

Another thing you might want to consider is emailing or calling Neil Jacobson...he is an interesting fellow with a lot of experience and he knows his bows

Throw some broadheads on. The 2016s should be really close to correct and 2018s for the 57# limbs.......... tune till broadheads and fieldpoints both hit together........
Bowhunting is "KILL and EAT" not "Catch and Release".....Semper Fi!

X2 on the straightener. I have an Arizona Arrow Straightener. It is a bit expensive, but will pay for itself fast for anyone who shoots a lot of aluminum arrows!

To get my brain back in order for a bit today I grabbed the old 5575 Gold Tips 30" with 50 grain inserts, 125 grain head and 5" vanes.

Bullets....

Shot them with field points and my 125 grain Magnus 4 blade sitngers, same point of impact out to 30 yards.

Those 5575's should be .400 spine deflection which would indicate that the 2117, which is also .400 spine deflection, ought to work fine

DDave,

I am gonna order some 2117's again.  This time I will start with full length shafts and work from there.  The shafts I have were from my 57# limbs, and being cheap I was trying to get them to work.  For the sake of my brain I need to order 6 at full length.  Or just leave the 2117's for the 57# limbs and the GT's for the 53# limbs.

Do some bareshaft testing with those arrows before you fletch them...one way a buddy and I build a "test kit" for bareshafting is by leaving one arrow unfletched for a particular spine and material...we often do this with just a half dozen arrows...of course it helps that between us we shoot quite a range of spines out of a lot of different weight bows of different configurations...the very best way to learn about dynamic spine is shooting bareshafts of varying spine range a lot

DDave,

I got an email out to Neil explaining what I have done and asking what he recommends for his bows.  Hopefully hear from him soon.

I think I need to go with the "kiss" method here, keep it simple stupid.  The bow shoots well with the 2117's and the GT 5575's.  Time to just shoot a lot and shoot often.  And let the cards fall where they may as to which one I find to be more accurate.

In the end it comes down to shot execution...the best tuned arrow will often react poorly with a sloppy release...the fact is a lot of game has been killed over the years with arrows that we would today consider to be rather poorly tuned...and continued good shooting is what gives you confidence to execute under pressure

Actually it sounds more like your bow is well centershot than anything else. That would definitely explain the different spines shooting so well.

God bless, Steve
