String makers: Serving size question
« on: April 11, 2016, 05:44:00 PM »
I'm currently shooting an 8 strand string, said to be D-97 most likely. If not, I'd guess D-10. I like the string a lot, but the nocking point on the serving is a little worn, and my Boning Classic nocks are a little loose.
I've been heating them with steam and pinching them to fit better, but thinking it may be time to get a tool and learn to re-serve myself.

What size serving do you recommend for this combination?

I am not a string maker, but I do serve my own strings after may buddy makes them for me. I use 14 strands of D97 with Halo .024 serving, and get a perfect fit on my Easton X nocks and on my GT nocks. I would think for 8 strand, with the Halo you would need to go to the .030. Or maybe if another brand makes an .027 size, that might would work also?

8 strands, my best guess for fit plus it won't be nearly as apt to slip would be .032 Power Grip.  I rarely make a low strand count string anymore, so that's just a guess on the size.  A big problem with them is serving slipping--just not a lot for a fat serving to grab on to.  Might be better off to double serve, maybe two layers of .014 or .017 over .014.  With Dynaflight '97, I liked 12-14 strands with .024 Halo or .025 62XS.

When I used to make some of my skinny strings,a 8 strand D97 I would double serve it.First with 3D serving .017 then over that with a 62XS .021 just over the finger area. They would fit my X-nocks and Easton 3D Super nocks great.A Bohning Classic has a much larger throat.I don't think you'll find a large enough diameter serving to fit.I have gotten away from those skinny strings.I've seen with some experimentation with the string with some Teflon tape and serve over that to get the nock fit you want. These days I prefer to use 18 strand BCY-X with loops padded to 22 strands and serve with Halo .021,an excellent string material in my opinion.

You guys are saying what leads me to think it may not be D-97., sounds like a low strand count for that. The nock fits nicely on the unused portion of serving, just not where it's been worn.

Don't know what's underneath-doesn't appear to be double served, but maybe tape underneath.

Could be 8 strands of 450+--it's a fairly large strand.

Put a little dental floss on it and you will be done.

I remember when making skinny strings,8 strands of D97 is roughly .060 in diameter and 6 strands of 450+ was close to that same diameter. When I made either one I would double serve both the same way.It could possibly be 450+,it does have one of the largest single strand diameter of strings in my experience.
