Texas Turkey Opener
« on: April 12, 2016, 11:41:00 PM »
Let me start out by saying I have mainly been a lurker and not much of a poster on this site. I told myself a couple of years ago I was going to post more but....
I truly love this site and have learned a lot.

Anywho the season opened a couple of Saturdays ago but just now found the time to try and type out the story.
It was a beautiful clear morning and as I walked to my spot I could hear Gobblers in the distance.
I was a few minutes later than I wanted to be getting to my pop up that I had set at the edge of the tree line next to a pasture. I put my hen decoy out about 10 yards from my blind and then got setup inside.

Tried to sound like a sexy hen with my ole box call. Wasn't long and a bearded hen came at a fast walk towards my decoy, I think she was lonely! I debated about shooting her but decided not to. She milled around for quite a while feeding then moved on down the tree line out of sight.

I had not heard anything gobble close by and was starting to think maybe I should have taken a shot at the bearded hen, about that time here  she is again. She hung around a few minutes but I stuck to my bows and let her walk.
A half hour or so had gone by with no activity other than me making a little noise with the call when a Gobbler comes strolling up from my right at a pretty fast walk...a bit out of my range.
He appeared a bit suspicious of my setup and walked on by then I hit him with a little hen talk and he fanned out and started strutting around... sorry will resume this later ,off to bed now

Can't wait for the rest!

On another note, didn't I meet you last weekend at the shoot in Vanderpool? I could swear that I met a fellow that said he handle was CDK, and that he hardly ever posts much. I'm thinking it was you! Nice chatting with you, and hope to see you at Chester!

I have a bearded hen back behind the house I first saw two years ago.  Saw her again a couple days ago.  Glad to see she is still around.  Now back to the story.

Back to the story...he was making a big show but would not get close enough. Ole tom was off to my left just inside the tree line and I could catch a glimpse of him by looking out the back left corner of my blind. I'm standing up in the blind, well on my feet anyway, watching him. I hit the call ever so softly a few times and he would gobble. This went on for ten minutes or so until I couldn't see him any more and his gobbles were getting farther away. So I decided to sit back down and as I was making the move to sit down I look towards the decoy...I will never forget this, there stands another gobbler all hugged up to my decoy, I mean he has all but mounted this thing and I never heard him come in. I pick up my Bear Montana pick a spot on the turkey, there was just enough turkey that the decoy wasn't covering, and loosed an arrow. Shot right under him...that's correct , I missed!!Well Mr. Tom half jumped and half flew for about 10 yards, stopped, and started back towards the decoy. He is fanned out and strutting towards her...so now I'm looking at the string from my string tracker that is attached to the arrow I just shot and thinking if I knock the arrow that I now have in my hand I will not...I get in trouble sometimes when I go to thinking so I knocked the arrow and let it fly, I didn't miss this time. The Zwickey that was glued to a Port Orford cedar from Three Rivers did the job and I retrieved the bird not 40 yards from the blind.
That was a hoot ...like I said I won't soon forget the way that bird was hugged up to that decoy! Oh and the bird weighed 22#, with 10 1/4 inch beard, spurs about 15/16" long

Awesome!

Thanks for sharing.  I say it every time... birds have gotten the best of me for years now; I this is the year I'm going to get it done!

Fantastic! It's a real accomplishment to take a turkey with a bow! Well done sir!
