Missing my bows..
« on: April 20, 2016, 11:07:00 PM »
Well, I've made it to El Paso. The next month I'll be spending a lot of time wandering around the New Mexico desert. Its always fun to explore new environments. They actually have Gemsbok here, though they call them Oryx.
I swung by Barnes and Noble for some books and magazines to bring out with me. What a disappointment. Last year they had Trad Archers World. Now, nothing. Also zero books on traditional archery or bowhunting. They did have a copy for Traditional Bowhunter, but I have a subscription so that issue has already been read and reread. I grabbed some books on Christian Apologetics instead.

Looking forward to the next Tradgang Virtual Shoot when I return. Tentative date will be the first week of June. I'll open a poll for what people want to adjust. I've said it already, but any changes wont be drastic. I want folks to participate and if its too crazy-pants more people will shy away.

I found a guy posting on a longbow-themed blog on facebook. After putting some context clues together I find he's based at Ft Benning with me, so I raised the flag and hopefully we'll get some pig threads early this summer. Pigs are hard in the heat, but the goal for me is more along the lines of meeting another single-stringer.

I'll make a little extra coin this month and the plan is to reinvest that in a back quiver and little ASL for my youngest. His birthday will be while I'm gone, but such is Army life. When I get back I'm hoping to put some good "big boy" archery stuff in his hands.
I hope all are well!

Cav, I spent several years at Bliss as a dependent, and got to watch lots of missle shoots at White Sands and Red Canyon. One of my brothers was born at William Beaumont. Spent a fair number of days chasing lizards and jack rabbits with my fiberglass longbow, and scared a few of them. Where we lived on post is now a motor pool. Enjoy some of that good Mexican food while you are there, and earn some TDY. Thanks for doing what you do.

I was at Las Cruces in '71 and was a training aid, along with some SF guys from either a reserve or guard unit at Cruces, for the Ranger cadre when they were developing desert training at White Sands.  Shoot, I didn't understand what they were doing there when Vietnam was still going on. They were looking toward the next wars.  Lot of rabbits out there for targets and lots of space to run around in.

Thanks all! Boy...the times you wish you sprang for a take down Hill.. Grr. I'm here as an O/C augmentee for a recon unit. Long story short, I have a HMMWV, an open desert, unlimited fuel, and a LOT of time. I may pick up a sling shot just to keep life interesting. But after this I'm gonna sock my pennies away for a take down. More to come on my bowless adventures. Thanks for the appreciation. We have so many veterans or service member family members.

My husband was at Benning, before I met him. He was real excited when I went down near there for the Hill Gang hog hunt. He has lots of memories of his stint in the army and Columbus.

Thanks, and enjoy those days you will have shooting with your son. That should make up for a missed birthday. When I was born, dad was out to sea. The subsequent missed birthdays are forgotten, but I remember the times I spent with him.

There was a kid from my home town that managed to take his Bear takedown to every place that he was stationed.  That was the reason he became a trad hunter, a three piece takedown was easier to haul around than his compound.

Thank you for serving. Been there do that, loved it but enjoying life after service as well. I got a really nice quiver for my four year old granddaughter at OJAM last year. Left you the info on your other post about looking for one.
