Draw Weight reduction
« on: May 04, 2016, 09:14:00 PM »
I'm considering having Blacktail reduce the draw weight on my 2 Blacktails and refinishing them. Has anyone else had this done? Are there  any draw backs? I can have both bows reduced cheaper than buying a set of limbs>

No reduction, but Allen Pope refinished my BT and I am very satisfied with the finish.  It has stood up very well on elk hunts, on bear hunt and on deer hunts.

Couple of years ago I did send my 60# BW to the factory so they could reduce its weight some and refinish it. Came out to be 54# - one can see what has been done, but the looks and performance is still there - 6 # less do not seem to be much in numbers, but to me it made the difference...so just happy in this case - hope your project will come out as well too  :)

I believe the bowyer is the best judge of what can be done. I had a nice RER Retro that was just a bit too much for me. I contacted Kevin and he checked his records. That bow had already been thinned quite a bit to meet the ordered weight and he did not feel any further weight reduction was possible. On another bow, he felt 8 - 10% would be reasonable.

I've had a few bows reduced but only by the original bowyer. It is hard to believe but every bow I've had reduced seemed to shoot faster after the reduction, without fail. It has to have something to do with drawing to full draw and proper release. I've never used a chrono, so this is all by sight and feel, but I've always been happy after the bowyer has completed the process. Don't hesitate, listen to your bowyer and go for it.   :campfire:

Ron makes a good point about the individual bow. I have had a couple reduced, and also had one rejected from reduction because of the way it was originally made. Contacting the original bowyer is the key.

I had a longbow reduced by 10#, which the bowyer told me was the maximum he recommended. It worked fine.

Talk to a bowyer and get an honest answer. I just sent one to a reputable bowyer to drop 6#'s and something happened which rendered the bow unshootable. He had full confidence going into it but now I'm without my backup bow  :(
